How Long Before the Limbs Weaken?

Post by tman74 »

Sooo...a friend of mine apparently had left his phoenix cocked for a 4-5 days. He had bought a new string for it, cocked it, put it in the closet and forgot to uncock it. He's worried that his limbs have weakened. I wasn't 100% sure so I thought I'd ask the knowledgeable ladies and gents of the forum what they think. Thanks! :)

I was thinking back to this story I read on the site a while back:

Sometime ago there was a post about someone leaving their Excalibur Vixen cocked and stored in a closet for about 6 months by accident. I remember them saying how bad they felt about it until they discovered it hadn't done any damage to the crossbow.

I can't remember which forum member it was but I remember them stating the "point of impact" hadn't changed when they finally shot the bow. The crossbow was still *matched* to the sight setting implying the limbs hadn't weakened (wasn't hitting low).

The bow had gone unchanged.
Based on this information, I suspect your friend should be fine.

I seriously doubt there is any damage. My personal best is two days in a closet. I also forgot, just not as long as your friend! LOL
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4

Don't feel bad. A friend of mine left his cat in the closet for two weeks by mistake once.

I shoot my phoenix alot and the string is never relaxed; I haven't left my crossbow cocked for several days but it has been cocked all day on the stand (10 plus hours) several times; have never had any problems; IMO, no need to worry at all.

Yep...no worries there! Just keep shooting and hunting! Excalibur = Recurve...simply perfect!

I left an Emax strung for about 3 years, and often cocked overnight to break in new FFF strings, was chronying it when I sold it, no measurable loss in fps.
