22 vs 20 inch bolts

I have been using 20 inch arrows for many years but was thinking of getting some 22 inch arrows. I was wondering if there are any differences performance wise between the two.

only thing i might see to them is stablizing the arrow faster in flight being a tad bit longer....the 2117 alum shaft i use they would be bout 24gr heavier........bob

I tested both 20 and 22" carbon power bolts against each other. There was no obvious difference in accuracy. But using 22" is an easy way to get good FOC while still using same size broadheads you have. Less chance of forgetting to unload the arrow before uncocking your bow too. It sticks out further obstructing your foot in the stirrop

I have made both, did not find one better than the other.
The differance in weight was about 20g.Not even 1" lower POI at 20 yards.
I don't like having the broad head sticking past the stirup when moving through the bush, so I went back to 20".

I used 22" arrows out of my Exocet 165 for a few years, but I've gone back to 20" and an overall lighter arrow to get the most out of my bow (flatter trajectory, more speed). No difference in accuracy.

Only time it would be of advantage IMO is if you were to build a heavier bolt and need to move the FOC back a bit, might be worth using a longer heavier bolt then.

If you find 22 inch arrows or shafts on sale there is no reason not to use them.
A longer arrow may help you find it. That's 2 inches more to stick out of the grass or snow after a shot.

I went the other way. From 22 inch to 19 inch. I wanted less flex in flight and at POI. Should equate to better arrow dynamics (sorry) and better penetration. Have noticed no difference in POI and have not had an issue with penetration with the 22 inch. Just wanted to go with a heavier, shorter arrow to try it out.

I agree with Captain Frank I collected a bunch of damaged shafts and cut one inch off and to my surprise saw no difference.
