I agree with Awshucks, open side down. Learned this in the dark one evening. They can't fall off the string that way.

Like everyone has already mentioned, it's easy to uncock.
For me it's claws over the string and not under.

I also shortened the cocking rope enough that it shortens the cocking motion needed for my exomag.

I just keep a firm grip on the handle when uncocking and never the rope as all of it will go through the claw.

There are a lot of things that are easy as pie to do in practice in broad daylight that are the dickens to do in a stand in the dark! And inside a pop-up its DARK!!!

I stand 5 feet 9 inches and weigh 150 pounds, and am 55 years old. I am not muscular. I have no problem using the cocking rope to uncock my 225 pound Exomax. It is more difficult to cock than uncock. If you can cock an Excalibur then you are quite capable of uncocking one with the cocking rope.

Uncocking the bow requires exactly half the force needed to cock it. That's the beauty of pullys, they half the effort. Since you are only moving 1 string/handgrip but you are moving it 2x as far as when you pull on 2 grips, you are cutting the draw weight in half.

I uncock my exomax with one hand all the time and it is a piece of cake.

For me, it matters not if claws are up or down. What matters most is that the rope is pulled tight to keep claws in place. Do have to say, facing claws up makes it easier to check if they're in place.

To cock the bow either way works for me.

But uncocking ...I've got two scratches on two equinox now from uncocking with the hooks over the string. the hooks can skip semi over the rail and scratch up the realtree skin. With the hooks under the string, the meaty part of the hook has more of its body squared to the rail side, and can't skip over the edge of the rail.
