Vortex has arrived

Post by Hester0305 »

My vortex came today but it was raining of course. I put it together and shot it several times in my shop at about ten yards. It was kinda weird at first pulling it back to cock it for the first time but I soon got over that feeling. I think it is supposed to rain the next couple of days. I can't wait to chronograph it and shoot it off the bench to see what kind of accuracy I will get out of it. I put a set of Monkey tails string silencers on the string and it quietened it down some. I shot it about a dozen times and surprisingly its really not that hard to hold up and aim without a rest realizing I was only shooting ten yards away. I will break it in the first clear day I have to do some shooting. I don't really like the 4 inch vanes that came on the Gold Tip arrows I will probably fletch some 2 inch Blazers. Wish me luck with my early christmas present.

Congrats on the new weapon.
I have found that the one thing that amplifies the noise is the stirrup.
Get that covered with camo tape and you will notice the difference right away.

Thanks everyone, I am going to chrony it today if the rains keeps holding off, and maybe get it sighted in from the bench.

This a great forum because from what I've seen there is a lot of positive comments that can really help a new person to crossbow shooting and hunting.

Thanks everyone I will keep you informed on how everything works out.

I chronagraphed by crossbow today and it is shooting 301 fps with an Excel string and a 407 gr. Gold Tip Lazer II bolt with a 100 gr. pt. I shot it at 20 yards while it was raining and zeroed it in at 20 and then when back to 50 yards to check the marks on my scope and it was shooting about 3 inches high. I had a couple of fliers that went left or right in a group of 4 arrows each time. I was shooting steady from the bench so I haven't singled out which arrow is flying different just yet because it started raining pretty hard and had to quit. I was shooting a 100 gr. point with a 110 gr. brass insert. I will play with it some more to see if I can get it to group better at 50 yds and get the scope completely dialed in.

Congrats on your new vortex; I haven't shot this model but alot on this forum and other forums as well do own it and haven't heard not one negitive comment about them; of course, it is a excalibur; hope you many years of enjoyment out of it; don't forget to adjust the speed dial on your scope; using a brass insert, you will need to knock of a few fps from it; I would suggest to set your speed dial to about 293 to 295 area and give that a try; hope this works; if you have any questions, there are alot of smart people here (not me) that gives out great advice; we are family here and good help is always given;

Merry Christmas and a healthy 2012.

Thanks so much on the advice everyone, I did have to tune my speed dial a little at 50 because I was hitting high.
