Crossbows are not considered firearms by CBSA nor the CFC. Just have the seller pack it up and ship it (so long as it's ok to do so on the US side). Mind you, there are some prohibited crossbows, which cannot be brought across the border; the Vortex is not one of them.

I shipped a crossbow and arrows to another forum member last year from the US to Canada with no problem. It took close to 2 weeks to get there, but it got there in fine shape. I'd send it through the Post Office and not UPS though. It has something to do with tracking once it reaches Canada, plus the USPS was more reasonable for shipping costs too. I declared it as a crossbow with arrows.

you will probably have to pay duty.
but you should have no issues bringing it or mailing it over the border

USPS is the way to send. Have the sender declare it as a crossbow and the value. He may mark it as a gift and chances are that the reciever will not pay duties.

Often not when sent through the Post, but it is a possibility.

I received a parcel from the US this year and had to pay because the value was over a certain amount - even though it was marked gift. :( That was the first time so I wonder if rules changed?

Years ago Patti purchased her custom Vortex from Greywolf here on the forum. He declared it at $750 and marked it as a Wedding Gift. USPS to Canada Post to my door in 7 days and without duty. It is hit and miss, mostly miss...all depends on the mood of the Customs Sorter at Canada Post.
With UPS and Fed Ex you can almost be certain to pay on arrival.

Just ship it USPS. You will not have to pay duty as excaliburs are made in Canada and the two countries have a free trade agreement. You will have to pay the taxes on the actual value of the item, unless you can slide it by as a gift or undervalue it.

DO NOT make the mistake I made and be very clear its a crossbow. ANYTHING remotely connected to a firearm be it parts or look alike will put you in a world of hurt. BEST OF LUCK. If you could get a excalibur carton that would help for shipping. Aging.

I bought a used crossbow off Vixenmaster and it was declared as a crossbow and a gift.And yes duty had to be paid or the bow would not be released to me.

Just a heads up.

Derek You should have sent the duty ticket back to Scarborough for a refund. I have done it. Remember, according to NAFTA anything manufactured in participating countries do not have duty applied to them if they are purchased by persons within those countries.

Derek;

Was that HST or was it duty that was paid? I've never had to pay duty, but I've been dinged for HST.

Also, only use USPS/Canada Post. I've had stuff delivered by UPS or Fed Ex and the brokerage fee is killer. I've tried to do the self declare from UPS, I can't remember how to do it, but it was a pain.
