My rifle naturally wants to point left. Go figure.
Perhaps you should set your rifle down and have a good talk with it, remind it that it has no free will and should point where you choose to point it.
Mine points up when I carry it on a sling, if it is in my hands it is pointing in the safest possible direction. Or if everything goes right, it is pointing at my quarry.

Sounds like today is the big day for the registry! Woo!

Will be time to sell guns and buy new ones. I don't believe the records will be destroyed. Likely have copies of the files elsewhere.

Even if they kept the records they would be useless almost instantaneously.
Thousands of firearms will change hands every day, so records of where they were today will not be relevant to where they are tomorrow.

Wheelie, the legislation clearly states that all of the information in the registry will be destroyed. How many times does Minister Toews have to say "the data IS the registry". Due to the manner in which the legislation is written, the government could, theoretically, be held in contempt if the data is not destroyed. Why do you think there is such a huge uproar from the opposition? The Conservatives are clearly placing legislation in place that will destroy all the data so no future government can resurrect it. That's the whole point, or this legislation would not be needed! Legislation could have been introduced to just not require any future long guns to be registered, but, that's not how it's written.

Guess the opposition is kicking themselves now for defeating the private member's bill a year or so ago that just did away with the registry but didn't destroy the data, huh?

But don't go burning your registration certificates, or shooting them up, or shredding them, or failing to carry them on you just yet folks...

Congrats guys. I sort of took offense at this though..

Toews said the registry — created by Jean Chretien's Liberal government following the massacre of 14 women at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique on Dec. 6, 1989 — is "a billion-dollar boondoggle" that does nothing but penalize law-abiding hunters and farmers.

"It does nothing to help put an end to gun crime, nor has it saved one Canadian life," he argued.

However, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police has argued strenuously in favour of keeping the registry, calling it an essential law enforcement tool. The association says police consult the registry, on average, more than 10,000 times a day, often to determine the possible presence of a shotgun or rifle in a home where they've received a domestic violence call.

Here in the good ole USA it is pretty much taken for granted by all LEOs that there will probably be a gun present in your home. Rarely are they a problem. I am 62 and have carried a handgun almost every day since I turned 21 (actually more like 18). Never had one jump out and shoot someone or anything. Have bookoos of guns around the house and none of them have ever jumped out and shot anyone either even though several stay loaded (just in case of emergency).

Last time a LEO noticed I was carrying he simply asked if I was and then wanted to see my weapon as he carried the same one off duty and had never seen a wallet holster for the Ruger LCP. He liked mine and showed me his a few months later when I saw him again.

I hope you guys end up getting all your gun rights back.

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police may have argued that point, however, their front line officers say otherwise!

In a poll conducted by Calgary Police Service Constable Randy Kuntz of front line police officers, more than 85% of respondants stated that the Long Gun Registry was absolutely useless to them in performing their duties.

The front line cops knew that when it came right down to it (past tense...YEAH!!), the Long Gun Registry was useless to them and that in the end, good old fashioned police work was what closed investigations, not a database full of often incorrect information.

From what I understand, whenever the cops pull up anything on anyone the registry is accessed - that accounts for the high access numbers. So even if they're pulling over speeders they're checking.

We've had the gun/no gun in house discussion with officers - they say they feel better if they know beforehand if there are guns in the house. We respond by asking why they don't just assume there are guns in the house no matter what? After all, persons most likely to possess illegally, store improperly, and use guns for crime AREN'T going to have their firearms registered. Duh.

At any rate, we popped open a bottle of Baby Duck (a bit of an inside joke - thanks Ryan!) and toasted at dinner tonight! :D
