Silencing your Crossbow!

Post by Buckwacker »

Hi All a Newbie here!
I read somewhere that wrapping your stirrup with Limbsaver handle
rubber grip will help in reducing vibration(noise) and that filling your barrel with spray foam will as well. Does anyone know that this is in fact true and if so could some one please post some pics how they did it? I have a new Vortex and just installed the BowJax Maxjax on the S5 and would like to get ready for turkey season Thanks :)

You will never be able to completely silence a crossbow. My top three for silencing is:
1) heavy arrow
2) cat whiskers served near the ends of the string
3) S5

Foam filling the rail and adding dampening material to the stirup will reduce harmonic resonance to a small degree. Use the search feature for photos filling the rail.
I use the above methods except a heavy arrow for a noticable reduction.

It's pretty easy actually. The stirrup, just take it off and wrap it with the LimbSaver wrap. On the wrap though, prior to starting, fold the strip in half and make a mark. As you're wrapping, you'll need to stretch the rubber some to get it to wrap the entire stirrup. When you hit the half way point, you should be half way through the wrap. If not, unwrap and start again.

On foam filling the rail, I took everything off and out of mine, and then wrapped the rail with tape to keep the foam off of everywhere I didn't want it. Fill the 2 cavities of the rail and let it harden a few days. Take the tape off and start cutting/carving out the holes and area for the trigger assembly.

As enormous said, you'll never completely silence one. You can quieten them down to some extent, but you'll never get them down to a whisper.

I watched a certain friend of mine cut something off his stirrup recently because his bheads were hitting it, keep an eye on that.

One of the strings is quieter than the rest, can't recall which one, someone will chime in, but when I was trying to tame my Emax, it and about 30-40 gr more arrow weight did the best job.

I wouldn't bother trying to fill the voids in stock with foam its a waste of time. I reckon rubber wrapping yer stirrup will cut down vibes. IMO trying to quiet down yer CB isn't worth the time & trouble because it won't ever become quiet enuff to matter hunting game animals. Aim low to middle of heart & all is good.

In addition to what Enormous said Xcel, 452X or Dacron strings help.
I did the foam thing but used about an inch of silicone RTV at the trigger end and where the string sits at the front of the rail. It's all cumulative and it all helps to lower noise. Bear in mind that the most quiet bow will spook an alert deer so lowering noise is for the human's ear (the shooter and maybe neighbors) not the animals that you are shooting at.

Another "how to quiet my xbow" thread... that means I have to chime in with "shoot naked"!

My bow is naked and it's LOUD. Shooting a Vixen against the faster, flatter shooting bows in 3D, I'm not willing to sacrifice a FPS for a dB.

I found I get used to the noise and don't notice it much after a few shots.

And, during deer season my xbow is silent....

Deer season ended Sunday, so I tried an experiment with my Phoenix.

Took the string off.

No noise at all when I pull the trigger now!

There ya go, but major bucks since Mark Henegar went silent, leaves custom built [Agin] or Y-25's.

Imho, one needs more excuses than noise reduction to invest in any of the 3. All being simply gorgeous will work, lol.

I'm a nobody compared to some of the non-noise reduction crowd.

I won't presume to list them, but if you check a bit, you'll see they stack the game up regularly w/o much effort on noise.
