Phoenix for Moose
Hi guys I am looking at getting a Excal Phoenix to replace my Hoyt MagnaTec(which is for sale) because I don't have the time to shoot my bow as much as I would like. I have found a good deal on a Phoenix and wanted to know if it would cover me for all my hunting needs. I live in Northern ON and hunt whitetails, bear and moose. Also what yardage would I be good out to? Here is the package, what do you think, thanks

Carbon bolts
field points
new unopened pack of 150 bolt cutter broadheads

Re: Phoenix for Moose
I think you need to pull the trigger on the purchase & go kill that moose!!
The phoenix & boltcutter combo will do the job...keep your shots at reasonable and ethical ranges, no different than a vertical.
Good luck!!

Re: Phoenix for Moose
I would say 40 yards at least, I don't notice much difference until I get 50 yards, with my Phoenix, when target shooting. Excal themselves say it is the minimum they recommend for moose, as for deer, there will be no issues there.

Re: Phoenix for Moose
I would guess the Phoenix with a Boo string will do just fine on a moose. I have a Vortex and been working on a setup for bison and came up with a 535 grain arrow using Easton FMJ bolts, a brass insert and a 100 grain fixed BH. With a flemish string I expect 295fps with that and to keep 96% of that at 30 yards. The Phoenix is advertised at 25 fps less than my Vortex, so let's just say you'd still be around 259fps at 30 with that arrow. That's still 79 ft-lbs of energy at 30 yards. Should blow right through a moose with a good fixed blade BH like a Montec or something similar.
Welcome to the forum! You will LOVE the Phoenix.

Awesome guys, thanks for all the replies. I am just getting caught up in thinking I need more because my buddies have the Equinox and the Exomax, now I was thinking I need the Vortex/Exocet but this deal seem to good to pass up and the crossbow comes with everything except a case(no big deal my trade I do everything from, sewing, welding, machining, metal work, composite work and painting to name a few) my buddies refer to me as the guy to know. Wait till you see the case I am going to make for this bad boy. Sounds like the Phoenix will suffice just fine. I have not found one bad thing said about the Phoenix on the net! Since I am new to Crossbows I just wanted to run it by everyone, what would you say this package would be worth it has the Varizone scope?
Oh ya anyone lookin for a Hoyt Magnatec, this thing is powerful.

Re: Phoenix for Moose
Really you won't have any trouble killing moose n such wid a phoenix. I kill nice fat hogs with Miss Vixen & she is 25 lbs less than a phoenix. Heck Miss Vixen don't take back seat to none of the heavier models. She can kill anything thats walks this earth if'en i feel the need & funds to hunt it!
Re: Phoenix for Moose
That package should be worth in $450 range. Just make sure you check for any crack in the limbs.
Cheers!

I don't think you'll have any problems. Stick to a COC broadhead. That's a Vixen in the picture below.

Nice, where, when, what was the weight, and by who was that moose taken? You got to love these Excalibur Crossbows.
Thanks,

Welcome to the Forum.
I'm like the rest of the others buy that deal and shoot a lot and get used to it. The Phoenix won't have any problems killing a Moose just stay away from those large shoulders and shoot a good broadhead that flies with your field points. I would shoot a heavier arrow on a Moose than I would with a Whitetail both arrows will kill a Moose but the heavier arrow should penetrate better. Good Luck Shooting.

Welcome aboard Jumper.
You should be fine with the Phoenix and a solid BH as many have already said. I myself went with the Equinox as my choice of xbow for Moose, but that's strickly a personal choice - the lighter and lesser fps Excals like the Phoenix will work just fine!
Whereabout in Northern ON are you from?
