Strings + stretch..HELP
It seems the more I read the more I get confused about strings. There are so many to choose from, and as of now I have the original one on my Exocet 200, which I have not even had the chance to shoot yet, which brings me to my question.
I have read that depending on what string you use a string will continue to stretch anywhere from the first dozen shots to 150 shots. Now for some one like me who just cannot run outside and shoot (have to drive a good 30 min away from home) therefore I cannot a lot, how can I make sure my scope is tuned to my string if the string continues to stretch?? and how much does a string have to stretch before it affects accuracy ???

Re: Strings + stretch..HELP
All factory strings will creep as they don't have time to pre-stretch them. Which ever string you use n shoot just keep th same brace height & scope should stay right. If'en you change to a diff type of string then it may mess wid you scope setting

With a new string, I just install on my bow and over twist so it sits with a much higher brace height.
I look at it daily and keep shortening until it stops growing.
Even the worst one I had settled down after 4 days.

it wont hurt to leave your bow cocked overnight to help the string stretch and settle in more

Common affliction called 'getting strung up'. Creep or stretch is most annoying w/ the Flemish strings. The endless loop Excel are at the other end of the 'strung up' spectrum, they seem to ride too high [it's not] forever.
There's a solution, build a serving jig and pre-stretch your own, then use same when it's time to reserve.
There's a lot of jigs pics that have been posted on here, probably the pick of the litter is one Boo made and I think has on his string web-site. Needs no welding or much more than a hacksaw and drill to fab up.
I have a pic of an all wooden one that I made up in about a half hour and looks like it, lol Lemme know if you need it.

I tried that for two days, but it did not really move.bucknbill wrote:it wont hurt to leave your bow cocked overnight to help the string stretch and settle in more
Looks like I will be going to check out Boo's site, thanks for the info. I guess I should buy another exel string and have it pre-stretched in case my original one is no good by deer hunting season.awshucks wrote:

Was also thinking about picking up a couple of Boo's strings since I've heard so much good stuff on them, and since I know it takes a while to receive string from him, by the time I receive them I will have had enough practice with the excel strings to be ready to move up to a Boo string.

Standard issue w/ new bows is Excel endless loop. They don't creep much and very slowly at that.
The FFF and a little discussed Flemish dacron [green and black] are another matter. When I shot FFF and was going thru a serving a week on an Emax, I was getting them for $8-$10 from Danny. Circa '06. His price rose a bit [what didn't?] and I started re-serving them, more for the challenge than the $.
The Boo's are worth waiting for, but in the mean time, you can get a flemish whatever the name is from Miller, green and black, serve your own cat whiskers on it and have a psuedo Boo. Sans pre-stretch.
Set [twist] the bheight on any Flemish ['cept Boo] about 3/8" above high mark and leave the bow cocked over night a time or two, shooting it as you like inbetween.
Same string, same arrow, same bheight = same poi.
The Boo strings are custom made for your preferred bheight for a reason, lol. Remarkable.

Re: Strings + stretch..HELP
Sorry . . .let me make sure I got this problem correct . . .you want to make sure that your bow stays accurate after you tune it in with your scope . . .once on target, you want it to stay on target, even if the string stretches, right?
OK . . .just maintain the brace height that you use to zero in the scope. The brace height is the distance from the riser to where the string rests on the rail when uncocked. If that distance is 1.5 inches when you zero your bow, then make sure it stays at 1.5 inches. As the string stretches, then the string will creep toward or closer to the riser. You will need to add a few twists to get it back to the same spot on the rail to where it was when you zero'd the bow.
As long as you keep the string at the same point on your rail when it's uncocked(maintaining brace height), then your accuracy will not suffer. Problem solved?
All string will stretch . . .even the ones that are pre-stretched. Some stretch more than others, but, they stretch.
Good idea getting a Boo string and getting your order in early. They do not stretch as much, but, you will still need to maintain your brace height.

i completly agree with sumner on this one..sumner4991 wrote:Sorry . . .let me make sure I got this problem correct . . .you want to make sure that your bow stays accurate after you tune it in with your scope . . .once on target, you want it to stay on target, even if the string stretches, right?

dont let that string creep worry you one bit ..thats the beauty of you bow..as it creeps you just put a twist or two in as needed..no bow press no pro shop no bill to pay ..as for worrying about staying on target. I have no problem at all with shooting today ..taking every screw there is out of my bow,,,putting it back together..with a new string ..set my Brace height and make a bet that i will hit a 30 yard 3" bulls eye first shot..and oh by the way i suck at shootin
but i have that much confidance in my excal..
and you should too..

Re: Strings + stretch..HELP
What you guys say make a lot of sense to me thank you. So its recommended to have the brace height between the two marks on the deck, but mine right now is out side the recommended area, so I guess I will have to wait for it to stretch before making any final scope adjustments, and then when my string is inside the two marks I just have to set my scope and then always keep that brace height by twisting the string.
Now to add another twist to all my questions, I have the S5system on my crossbow, which from what I have read the string should be a credit card thickness away from the S5 pads. So right now my string is about 0.27 inch away from the S5 pads, so will the excel string stretch that much, or do I need to untwist my string ??? because it does not look like the excel string has that many twists in it to start with, and I am assuming you need a minimum amount of twists in the string.

I have had string stoppers on my verticals for years. I can pretty much assure you that even a quarter inch away at rest the string is still coming into direct contact with the stoppers at release.
Not sure about untwisting the excal string as I am shooting a Parker compound at present and my Vortex is not going to be delivered until late Monday. I did order the S5s with it.

Re: Strings + stretch..HELP
no dont untwist..now im no expert but my understanding is a string will always creep.
the space between your S5 is fine all the way till its closer than that credit card space your saying..when it starts touching the S5 then its too close..i think then you start seeing rubber failure and you sure dont want that

Don't over obsess about the credit card gap. They're genereal guidelines, as long as the string doesn't end up resting against the bumper before you realize and adjust the brace height. Having no gap will shorten the life you get out of them before they split. With your brace height moving, just keep an eye on it. Being only a string width from your mark before you notice, makes little difference at 25yards.
