Just shot new Excal

Post by robertyb »

She is no longer a virgin. Shoots very good no doubt. I am shooting the firebolt with a 100 gr fieldpoint with factory string. The chart on here show me at 379 gr. at 311FPS. I turned the speed dial to approx 311 and sighted in dead on at 20 yards. Backed up to 30 yards and was shooting an inch or so high so I turned the speed dial up to 325 and shot a dead bullseye on next two shots. Went back to 20 and was almost an inch and a half high. What am I doing wrong?

Quess I need to set it at 311 and zero back in at 20 and find a place to shoot 50 like video says....and then go from there.

Advice welcomed. :D

Go to this page:

Go down to "Sighting In Your Crossbow Scope". That's easier than me trying to explain it.

Bingo. Turned it back down to 311 and shot at 20. Dead on. Backed off to 40 and had to shoot at top edge of target to have 40 yard mark on the target. Hit a few inches higher than the marker so adjusted speed ring till 20 and 40 were both on respective bulls. Speed setting is on 326. Almost dead on where I had it shooting 30 earlier. Came back to 20 yards again and still dead on. Come on deer season.

Hard as this is going to be to believe, the speed ring has nada to do w/ 20 yd crosshairs.

Dial it in at 20 and then speed ring it in at 40. Check 30 and 50 if you want. The closer you get to 'all on' the smaller the adj's on speed ring, the numbers on it can mean little, compared to actual chrony speed. btw

Your shifting poi at 20 can be a string creeping and giving you a lower bheight.

edit: see you got it, my bad.

Actually you are pretty much on the money. The POI has changed a tad again. Brand new string is stretching out for certain. I have been out shooting more and am not going to mess with sights anymore till the string settles down. It has moved quite a bit today.

If there's no toddlers around, leave it cocked overnight a time or two, will speed that bs up.

I like to take that creep period as an opportunity to sight in the P & P for a spare system while waiting on string to settle. If you note the pin's position on dovetail, they go off and on to same poi.

Congrats on your new crossbow I love my Vortex as well. They hold good groups out to 50 yards without any problems. I shot mine so much the first couple of weeks I wore out my serving and had to get it reserved. Good luck
