4" vanes vs Blazers

Post by rich l »

What vane would fly best with broadheads? 4" or blazers?

I found the 2" Blazer to outperform the 4" with my setups. They are lighter, give great accuracy and perform better in the wind.

I've been messing with alot of fletchings lately. I've shot arrows with....
4.5" vanes - perfom ok - about the same as 4" vanes
4" vanes - perform ok - not the best
3" quick spin/ quick fletch "crossbow" vanes - definately very accurate, but expensive
4" shield cut feathers - perform better than 4" vanes, not as good as 3"
2" Rayzr feathers - very good performance, super light - good BH stabilization
3" feather I cut to my own design of shapes - the 3" length seems to improve the performance over the 4" feather. Shape doesn't seem to matter much. These arrows perform well.

All my fletchings were put on with an AZ EZ fletch with 4 degree right offset, except the Rayzrs - for those I used the AZ EZ Bolt with alot of helical

I am leaning towards feathers. Their performance will not be affected by temperature, and they are a ton lighter (increasing arrow speed and FOC). But tehy can be affected by rain. So I am also going to try Blazers. I trust the guys on here - and many, many like the 2" blazer vanes on their arrows.

Happy fletching,

Hank........there is a product called fletch-dry.
I used it for arrows for my vertical bow. The feathers needed constant attention and replacement.
I've never tried the silicone spray myself.
I don't think feather fletching would stand up to crossbow punishment. Have fun.

Although the performance of feathers are superior to vanes I use Blazers. The issue I don't like about feathers is that if you have a pass through on a target they have to get refletched. It's no big deal but I'm going to stick with the convenience of a good plastic durable fletching.

I'd like to share some observations w/ the forum. 1st off, never shot aluminum arrows and for that matter, mechanical bheads. I have nothing to contribute on those two subjects.

Way back when I got my first Excal, an Emax in 05 or early 06, it came w/ FFF string and 'old' Gt's w/ alum insert and 5" vanes, w/ 100 gr point, about 357 gr total weight. It shot so close to 350 fps it was scary.

Miller turned me on to his Gt's w/ 4" vanes and brass inserts. They were called 'millers Killers' on more than one forum.

I refletched some of old and new w/ 2" Blazers, shot my best benched groups w/ same, 1-1.5" for 5 at 50.

Boo showed me something amazing w/ arrows fletched w/ 2" blazers and the AZ-EZ 'Bolt' arms. Beau coup helical, my Slicks, w/ some run out [about .007"] shot great.

I've since gotten the arms for the 'Bolt' but have not investigated this fully.

If you want to play, this would be a good starting point.

My next fletching change will be to the blazer style vains.
No matter where I look for information, it has been positive about this product.

My arrows have been aluminum from the start.
2315 for the vertical bow and 2216 for the exomag.

I just now bought some Easton Power Bolt carbon arrows.
After shooting them with the installed 5" vains, I can't wait to try the blazers.

The first arrow that I fletched with my EZ-Bolt, I thought I had done something wrong. It had so much helical it was funny looking. It reminded me of a whoops several years ago, using right wing feathers and a left wing clamp. They ,(the blasers) shoot great from the EZ-bolt but they are strange looking indeed.

The Arizona EZ "BOLT" replacement arms are only about $15 for those people with any other model EZ fletcher who might want an upgrade.

Hey Paul, remember those plain shafts w/ white 2" Blazers w/ all that helical Boo had? They looked like screws to me!

The man has the patience of a saint. He kept saying "Try this" and I didn't want to, as I was extremely focused on getting an arrow w/ 1" Slicks ready for the hog hunt. I finally shot one just to shut him up, lol, boy was my face red!

Here's something else I've noticed. There's a gazillion combos out there that has resulted in everyone having their own version of 'the ultimate'.

It's all good.

Thats one of the things that I really enjoy about shooting and the forum. The tweaking and piddlin' with it to make it better, seeing what someone else has gotten to work compared to my trys etc.I guess thats why we are all suckers for the "new and improved" everything.
