Testing Feathers and Vanes

Post by nchunterkw »

I have been re-fletching arrows with all kinds of stuff and tonight started to categorically shoot and catalog results. Here goes, and I'm not really advocating any one thing over another, just reporting what I see.

When checking POI for repeatability, I aim with the crosshair of the Vari-zone and not with the 30yd chevron.

Arrow = Horton Carbon Strike 20"
Nock = Std moon nock cutoff to be flat
Fletch = 2" Blazer installed with Arizone EZ Bolt fletch tool, RH helical
Point = 125 gr FP
Distance = 30 yards
POI Repeatability: Same arrow, 3 shots, all in 1" circle
Broadhead POI: - Muzzy MX3, just screwed on arrow not tuned - same as with FP

Arrow = Horton Carbon Strike 20"
Nock = Std moon nock cutoff to be flat
Fletch = 2" Gateway Feathers Rayzr installed with Arizone EZ Bolt fletch tool, RH helical
Point = 125 gr FP
Distance = 30 yards
POI Repeatability: Same arrow, 3 shots, all in 1" circle. POI 1" higher than with Blazers.
Broadhead POI: - Muzzy MX3, just screwed on arrow not tuned - same as with FP

Arrow = Easton Razer Bolt, 20", 2219 Al
Nock = Std moon nock cutoff to be flat
Fletch = 2" Blazer installed with Arizone EZ Bolt fletch tool, RH helical
Point = 125 gr FP
Distance = 30 yards
POI Repeatability: Same arrow, 3 shots, all in 1" circle
NOTE: Same aiming point as with carbons above, but POI 1" higher - I think due to heavier weight = more momentum = less speed loss at range
Broadhead POI: - Muzzy MX3, just screwed on arrow not tuned - same as with FP

Arrow = Horton Carbon Strike 20"
Nock = Std moon nock cutoff to be flat
Fletch = 3" Gateway Feather, Parabolic Shape installed with Arizone EZ fletch tool, 4 deg. Right Offset
Point = 125 gr FP
Distance = 30 yards
POI Repeatability: Same arrow, 4 shots, 3 in 1" circle, on was 3/4" off. Same POI as carbon arrows above.
Broadhead POI: - Muzzy MX3, just screwed on arrow not tuned - more testing to be done. 3 shots using different cock feather resulted in different POIs by 3" or more. These look great but might only be good for mechanicals.

Still to come............4" feathers in Shield cut shape, 4" factory installed vanes, 3" quick spin , quick fletch vanes, some custom made stuff.

Hope you find this interesting.

Yes to me interesting but I'm glad you're doing it.

Good review have done some playing around in the past as well . For feathers my favorite was shield cut 4 inch from gateway . Looked great and flew very well . Waterproof was either the white powder from Bohning ( not the best bag of white powder to be carrying in your archery tackle while on a crossborder hunting trip :? ) or hairspray .

Fuzzy where can you buy silicone by the quart ??
