Box call chalk

Has anyone used a substitute for chalk? I was thinking that rosin should do a better job than chalk.

If I remember correctly, the Knight & Hale turkey box chalk has rosin in it.

I don't know, straight rosin may be a little too "sticky" for a call. A little may be OK, but the straight stuff may not be good.

I mainly use pot type calls, but keep a box call in the vest in case the turkeys want something different. Because of it, I don't use very much chalk.

When I play ball I use rosin on my hands
It tends to build up and get sticky

it may not react the same on wood as it does skin

But dirt does stick to it

I've tried various sources of chalk for my box calls.
Even tried chalk powder like the stuff used in construction chalk lines.
Finally settled on the kids sidewalk chalk.
If the box call gets wet then simply wipe dry and apply a fresh layer of chalk.
I have one slate that I rub with the chalk and it softens the pitch.
The rosin will just gum things up and removing would require a solvent.

Just do not use chalkboard chalk, it contains wax.

Hey Don,
I use rail road chalk, you can but it on ebay or your finer sporting goods stores. You need to stay away from chalk that has wax in it, it will damage your call. It put's wax in to the wood and you have to sand alot to get it out, it change's the sound of the box. Stay away from the chalk that they used in school on the blackboards.

railroad or sidewalk chalk..... or old school chalk, it don't have wax
and thats why its not used in schools anymore.

Maybe some may know and maybe some don't,

Chaulk for box calls is really used to draw out any moisture that maybe in the wood allowing for a better friction. Most box calls can be used without chaulk and nthey will still run, but damp days with moisture in the air a box call will suck it into the wood and break down starts.

You can also use it on a slate call as slate is pourous material and also will exsorb moiture and the chaulk will help dry out the material faster.

Its the oil content that a user has to watch out as chaulk board chaulk has oil in it. Once oil is exsorbed into the calling material it near impossible to get rid of and will cause sliding in that area.

So this is why a caller wants chaulk on their calls is just to dry up the material for better friction....

I have a primos wet box call that doesn't require chalk at all. https://shop.primos.com/p-915-wet-box.aspx I assume this is what your speaking of when you say rosin.
