who says bigger is better

Post by munch »

here is prof that bigger is not always better.
i took a fellow out hunting tonight after work.me with the famous 870 jr 20 gauge the one that dusted a turkey yesterday morning and my friend with his mosseburg 12 gauge 3.5 " magnums auto. he has only ever killed a couple birds so thought we would see if we could put him on a bird .only took half hour and had 2 hens and a nice big jake come in. i whispered to him when the bird got into 20 yards to let him have it if he wanted the bird.when the cannon went off i expected to see the turkey explode in a cloud of feathers .big boom and the turkey runs off and another boom and no turkey .we joked for a while but i think he was way over gunned with a long gun and tight choke i think it caused him to miss .he was setup for a 50yard shot not a 20yard .about 1 hour latter out came a nice tom about 300 yards down the field.it took a bit to get his attention it was so windy he could not here the call the first time but when he did i teased him a little with a fight purr and he headed our way. i knew he was hooked as soon as he saw my pretty boy and puffed up then started the trot. i told my buddy to watch as he ran around the decoys to face pretty boy head on you could see his attitude change he knew the gig was up but only got about 2 steps before the little jr barked and turned him into a jelly head with a big puff of feathers he was down in his tracks .my buddy was happy he was on his way home with a turkey and learned several things about turkey hunting today. was a great hunt and hope to get out with him again

Oh I see now.... you were talking about shotguns!

Nice job Munch! Good hunt!

No need to buy into the magnum mentality. Cool to put the smack down on with the "Jr." :D

I have a love hate relationship with my 870 12 guage magnum. I hate the punishing recoil. But love it's accuracy & has never let me down........ :)

I would like to test fire the 20guage but I better not because I would have to buy one!!

Congrts to you and your buddy Terry. Every time I see another bird down it makes wish I could have been able to make the trip this year. Hopefully the tides will change for me this year and that I can make the trip next spring. Excellent, the story gave me goose bumps just reading it, .
Thanks,
Raymond

What a lot of folks tend to forget is if you pattern at say, 30 yards, if the bird is at 20 yards, you should hold slightly below the head and at 10 yards I'd be down to the waddles. He probably shot over the bird because his shot was still rising.

I shoot 3.5" Hevi 13 #6 and absolutely pounded a bird opening morning at 45 yards. But, I also have a Leupold turkey scope on my dedicated turkey gun that I have a lot of trust in. Optics make a heck of a difference and once dialed in with the right choke and shell make a good shotgun into a turkey slayer.
