Apsley Turkey Hunt

Post by Helmut »

Made it up to Apsley for some turkey on Sunday. Expecting to fill 2 tags. However, fate interveened and was called home early to deal with saltwater aquarium issues.
Anyway did manage to bag one bird. This guy kept coming into 50yard mark then circling back. He did this three times. Finally I gave a cluck on box call and he came into 35 yards. He was behind some birch trees looking out to see if i was around. Was kind of comical really as he would poke his head out every few seconds like a game. Finally he took a side step out right into my sight and boom end game. Unfortunatley i he flopped into the tree and damaged his left wing so no pic of that side.
On a side note when I picked up my tag I thought the new tags were stupid and after applying it to the bird I know they are stupid. What was the ministry thinking? I was really hoping they would ask opinion of tags during the turkey phone in call.
Gun was a 20ga 870 in cammo with a tightwad choke. Winchester turkey load in #4
Bird had 8.5inch beard. 1"spurs and weighed 19 3/4lbs.

Threw this pick in too. Shot of day breaking in Arthur April 28 2012. One of the great joys of hunting. Natures visual effects are awsome
