Finally Got My Mount Back

Post by Big58cal »

During all of the meetings this past week, the taxidermist called and left a message saying that my deer was done. Took off work early Friday because I was dog tired, but I still had enough energy to run by the taxidermist to get the mount.

It turned out pretty good. I've run out of room in my "man room" for hanging mounts, so this one went in the living room (over the protests of the wife). But I got home and hung it before she got home, so I had "squatter's rights" in my favor.

Thanks folks! :D I'm tickled with it. This was the first time that I had used this taxidermist for a deer mount. I used to use a guy back home that was pretty cheap and did a really good job. This place, I've watched them get better and better with their shoulder mounts through the years as I took them other critters to get mounted. I knew the second shot that had skipped off his back and had gone through the neck was going to be a little bit of a problem. We decided on a left turn on the form, thinking that some of the hair would overlay on top of others to help cover the hole, but still, there's only so much that can be done with cut hair. You can still see where the arrow went in on the left side, but they did a good job stitching it up and covering it up as best they could. Can't hardly see the exit hole on the right side.

They gave me a net score of 138 5/8" on the beast while they had it in there. :D I was guessing he would score somewhere in the upper 130's to low 140's. I believe that's big enough to make the books for the American Crossbow Federation, BuckMasters, and Safari Club International. I will probably enter it with the ACF, because I support the ACF and what they do and want them to have a record of it, but I haven't decided about entering it with the other 2. :? Different people that I've said that to have looked at me like I've got lobsters crawling out of my ears. It's weird though.......... It's cool that I finally got a deer that is that big and will make the record books, but that's not why I hunt. When I went hunting that morning, it was to get some meat, not a trophy deer. Even after he took a step and my initial shot hit a little far back, I could have let him lay overnight and found him, but coyotes would have probably gotten to him and the meat would have been ruined because of how warm it was. That would have defeated the purpose of me even being out there.

Think I'll just "marinate" on it for now and enjoy looking at him.

12 actually. There's about a 2" hook coming off of the right G2.
