Don't want to spend a lot of money on a new semi-auto shotgun eh? I don't know brother. You can get a good pump in the price range you are looking at. I'd be skeptical of a semi-auto for much under a grand personally. Good luck with whatever you decide.
I got a Browning pump when I was 17, lets see, that makes it 30 years old and going strong.

You got me looking at guns. My credit card ballance has a way of going up when that happens.
Check out Bud'sGunShop.com. I have friends who buy on there instead of at local shops anymore.

Mike remember " Buy for cheaper that is what you get " .
Personally I say save every penny and buy something that will last a lifetime .
I have the pump version of the Weatherby and the workmanship leaves alittle to be desired . I guess alot of the gun now are being pushed out the door .
My dad has a Winchester semi that is still going strong 40 years old .

Unfortunately those days of making guns are long gone. This may be of some help:

Re: Need advise on a new semi auto
I shot two Really nice guns last night, The new A400 Xtreme, Really light, xycles nicely, not much kick, and also an Xtrema 1, both really nice units, Biggest thing with the Cheaper Semi's i was told is they will not Cycle the Trap/skeet/target loads well. Thats why my Buddy just sold his Mossburg Semi....
Maxus is also a decent priced semi, little less then the Berettas, Another buddy has a Winchester SX3 that he is happy with and likes, i havnt fired it yet, but it does cycle light loads...
If you buy a cheap one, for 6-700 new, you may be dissapoited when doing skeet if it wont cycle target loads.... For goose/duck hunting it will cycle those loads fine....
Your best bet if to look for a good well taken care of semi, benelli, beretta, the maxus or SX3 ive all heard good about, im personally keeping an open eye for a good deal on a Beretta,
For now im just Shooting my 870, for any shooting i do!

Today's rifles are a toss-up, you have good and not so good, a sako is a tack driver out the box same as ruger and weatherby, young buck has limited $, i think he's looking at a vanguard with the money he has which is a accurate as any made, buy that 08 and go hunting, by the way weatherby ammo cost

Re: Need advise on a new semi auto
I own several semi shot guns I have Browning A 5's made in Belgim , a Rem Sp 10 for water fowl , Browning 10 , Bennilli Super Black Eagle 1 and have been in duck blinds with many brands ,, and I like the Bennilli more than any ,, you should be able to find a real good used one like that for your budget price of around 5 or 6 hundred .
