Arthritis disability brought me to crossbow hunting and I brought home a new Vortex yesterday, LOVE IT! I've watched all the instructional videos and have sighted the bow in at 20 yards with no issues, but I have a few questions. The local store didn't recommend the heavy 150 grain field point tips and traded them out for a 125 grain version, and they also sold me a 125 grain mechanical broad head (non Excalibur). I don't know that I would feel comfortable taking a 40 or 50 yard shot at this point, but if the situation presented itself, are the lighter broad heads going to be as inaccurate at longer distances as the instructional video claimed? Do I need to switch everything back to a 150 grain and re-sight the bow?

Re: Newby Questions
Make sure you have same weight field pts as BH's. Then sight in at 20 with xhair then by speed ring fer 30-40- & 50. Shouldn't have any trouble wid mech.s!
Re: Newby Questions
What arrows do you have, Firebolts or GT L II's? If Firebolts, I'd use the 150 gr Boltcutters, they were made for each other.
The mech's won't care which arrow they are on............

Re: Newby Questions
You will have no trouble being WAY accurate enough to kill a deer at 40 or 50 yards...but the deer's reaction time to the shot noise is still the same, and for the most part the shot noise is a bit higher with a crossbow than a vert bow. Something to consider this when thinking about those long shots. Welcome to the forum.

I also shoot the Vortex with the Firebolts that came in the package. I am using 100 grain fieldtips and am dead on at 20-30-40-50. I plan on trying 100 gr. Swackers this season. If they do not fly right out to 40 yards (my max for hunting) I will use my 100 gr.G5 Montecs cause I already know they do.

Re: Newby Questions
One last question........well, probably not , just want to make sure I have the procedure down correctly. After sighting the scope in at 20 yards, the next thing to do is to make 50 yard shots and zero the scope in with the FPS ring. Is this correct? Also, if my 125 grain tips are hitting correctly at 50 yards, there would be no reason to go up to 150, correct?

Re: Newby Questions
Would you make an adjustment on the FPS ring with a 30 yard shot, or save that for 40 or 50?automated11 wrote:I would do 30 or 40 yards before 50 just to make sure. There is quite a bit of drop at 50 yards and you dont want to ruin an arrow.

Re: Newby Questions
I think the scope instructions say to go to 40 yds after 20...............Doesn't really matter.............
