Ground Blinds

Post by UPSMAN »

Have noticed on a few of the TV shows as well as some photos on this site that some folks don't have to put much if any brush around their blinds. Noticed Wabi's on a previous post. Went to Canada last year and they didn't use any cover around their blinds either. Guess my question is- are northern deer just less skiddish or maybe just stupid. My deer in Georgia won't come near a blind unless it's heavily brushed in. If you leave it out in the open they seem to know it's there and avoid the area at all cost.

Its cause them GA deer be educated.   Ive been out west deer hunting a few times and the deer were no where near as skittish or as smart as the deer back home. Its probably because of the amount of hunters we have in ga and how often they get bumped. When there is a redneck up a tree around every corner, its hard not to get "learned."

I always throw some brush around mine, and usually some spruce brows up the corners of the blind where there are some tie downs I can attach them with.

wabi's blind stays out year round and also has the windows painted black.
I set up a blind in that spot years ago so it has become part of the landscape.
One thing I did notice several years ago (I also have a ladder stand covering that same spot - feeder & food plot) is deer that would normally walk right in would sometimes go on "high alert" when I was in the blind (with the windows open). I gave it some thought and decided perhaps the change from total camo to camo with a big black hole (the open window) was spooking them. I took a few cans of cheap flat black spray paint & painted the windows so they are black when closed and black when open.
Since I painted them I have far less nervous deer in the food plot when I'm in the blind. :D
And that's actually the third or fourth blind I've used there, they don't weather well. When I buy a replacement it gets set up in my shop and gets a paint job on the windows followed by a few days to "air-out" before it goes to the food plot.

I have a pop up ground blind i bought from Cabelas a few years back, its big enough for two people. Last year, I had on a few occasions almost had deer walk into my blind. Thought I may have to put the bow down and grab the knife instead   .

I hang a couple scent waffers inside the blind with me to cover any left over sent or to attract what I could. I have put it up near a tree, on the edge of the field or right in the middle of a clearing.

I hunt near a feeder and they always seem more interested in it than me.

I'm another Georgia hunter. Definitely alot of pressure around here. I'm strictly a ground hunter now and usually try and set up a natural blind where I'm hunting. Moving some logs around a good sized tree and then adding some leafy limbs around it to fill in the "blind" a little more. It works pretty good for me.

I am another Ga hunter. I have only used my DB blind for Turkeys but have had deer feed in front of me the same day I set it up and have had others look and run off on same day setups. I put mine out last Friday for this coming Saturday opener. I did not brush it in. I have it set up 20 yards off a main trail up against a new blowdown. I left the windows open I am hoping the deer will get used to it in a week and ignore it.

for deer, i always brush mine in.. i make it a 3 or 4 step process though.. i will brush it in a bunch, then come back in a couple weeks.. what looks like a good thick brush in, deteriorates once the leaves dry up and fall off, then i add more, then do the same thing in a couple weeks... only time i don't brush in my blinds is for turkey hunting.. they don't seem to be bothered by it at all...

Turkeys don't seem to mind the blinds. Deer do (around here anyway). But if it's something that's been out for a while and they're used to it, they don't pay any attention to them. We've got a 4' x 8' shooting shack built on skids that stays up in the woods. We can pull it around to different areas if we wanted to, but haven't in years. It sticks out like a sore thumb in the area, but the deer are used to it being there and don't pay any attention to it.

I hunt from the ground almost exclusively and wear "Leafy Wear" camo and just make a small natural blind out of limbs and logs/sticks lying around. Works great and lets me set up as many as I want/need to cover an area

After posting this picture on another thread i just realized what you said makes so much sense, my blind is already up for the season, but next year it's its getting a paint job.

Hmmmmmmm  Maybe the "manufacturer's should take note of this idea
