Opening Day Doe!

Post by Big58cal »

Started out at 4:15 AM this morning and it was 73 degrees here at the house. Got down to the farm and up in the tree about 6:10 AM. I had sweated something fierce climbing up to the ridge, so I sprayed everything down with Dead Down Wind and put out some scent wafers. The wind wasn't "ideal" but it would do.

It was supposed to had started raining yesterday afternoon, but as of right now, it still hasn't started yet. Before daylight I listened to a couple of coons fighting for a while to pass the time. After it started getting daylight this morning, I lased a few different spots around the area. Exactly 20 yards to the mineral block.

At 7:45 I heard some limbs break up on top of the ridge, but there had been a couple of squirrels cutting up there, so I figured it was them knocking crap out of the trees. I've got a bunch of limbs in front of me, so I can't really see that well up there. Directly, I saw a doe slowly making her way down off the ridge. She was at the far side of the saddle and when she got down to the bench, she gave me a shot then, but I wasn't comfortable with it, so I didn't even raise the bow. She started to go away from me, but then turned around and started coming back. In 10 minutes time, she only covered about 20 yards. She would throw her nose up every so often, so I know she was getting a slight wiff of me every so often, but couldn't get enough to spook.

She got about 25 yds away and must have gotten a good sniff, because she stopped, turned around and started to go back up over the ridge. Just as she turned, I flipped the safety off and raised the Equinox. She stopped, angling away from me up the hill. I put the 30 yd triangle at the back of her ribs and squeezed the trigger. Saw the Luminok light up and hit her right where I was aiming and heard a good loud POP. :D She took off, but I lost sight of her almost as soon as she took off because of all of the limbs and leaves. Didn't see the Luminok shining, so I figured that she still had the arrow. Looked at my watch and it was 7:55 AM.

Reloaded and sat there for a bit and then started packing my stuff up. Marked where she had been standing so I could find it when I hit the ground and went over to have a look.

So far so good.
Image

Looking a little better.
Image

This is starting to show some promise.
Image

OK, this is looking better by the step.
Image

Holy S**t! She can't be much further!
Image
Image
Image

Crap! Starting down the back side of the ridge! :x
Image

There she is!
Image
Image

There's my arrow! So much for my wraps ("Just Passin' Thru").
Image

Well, this at least explains why the arrow didn't exit. I hit the right side and this is the left front leg.
Image

Image

And this pretty well explains why she went about 80 yds! I hate heart shots! I would have much rather had lungs.
Image

She was standing uphill when I shot, so I went in what I thought was the right height, but didn't take into account the uphill angle she was standing at. I hit the edge of the stomach, liver, and slipped under the lungs and hit the heart. Fatal any way you go about it, but she made it over the ridge and onto the back side.

The new DaGriz knife christened in deer blood!
Image

And finally back down at the food plot where I can get the 4 wheeler to her.
Image

She weighed an even 100 lbs and was 2.5 years old. She looked pretty rough though. She was in the process of loosing her red summer hair and her winter coat was still really short. She looked like she had mange!

Got her soaking and cooling out in the cooler on ice right now. I'll start cutting her up tomorrow. Too tired tonight.

Man you didn't wait very long to get started on the venison list did you? CONGRATS! Great story and pictures, I just can't get myself into hunting at these temps, 94 this morning with winds and rain started about 2pm and we have had showers and lightning most all evening. I'll get my stands up in the next couple of weeks and by the time I get through huntin at BGAD it will be just right for me. I'm sure glad you had success because I saw several hunters today that came out empty and nasty.

I'm HONGRY!  Thanks Nathan! When she first started going away from me, I thought it was just as well, but then she had to tempt fate and came back toward me. Not a wise choice when a hungry predator with one of the finest bows ever made is nearby.

Thanks folks! I'll let you know how well she makes the skillet stink tomorrow.
