New member first xbow

Post by Crackedlimb »

I just purchased a excalibur ibex, I was wondering about the bolts/arrows as you guys call them weights. I have the firebolts that came with the xbow and was wondering if I could use those with the 100 gr rage and swhacker broadheads I already have or do I need to shell out more money to get started to have the right overall arrow weight? This crossbow was for my wife who is a vertical bow shooter like myself but was injured at work just three weeks before the season opens so I have had to change around all her stuff and now she will be shooting the ibex. Is a firebolt with the 100 gr rage or swhacker broadhead going to work for us?.......Thanks

My Excal Vortex is ready to go hunting tomorrow morning with the Firebolts that came with it and 100 grain 2" Swackers installed. It stacks them same POI as field points. Hope this answers your questions.

Thank you robertyb, that will do it for me then, I will be setting the ibex up with the swhackers in the shop for the wife. I will sight in the scope with 100 gr field points then mount the swhackers. Thanks again for the fast reply and good luck tomorrow.

Crackedlimb,
The minimum arrow weight for an Excalibur crossbow is 350 grains. Below this you can damage the bow. That being said, you should be around 367 grains with Firebolts and a 100 grain BH. If you look to the left of the Excal page (Forum Page) and click on "Arrow Performance" then on "Arrow Selection" at the top of that page, you can see arrow measurements for different arrows with 150 and 100 grain heads.

I bought some Carbon Express Maxima Hunter arrows which weigh about the same as the Firebolts and I am shooting 100 grain 2" Swhackers. You might want to shoot your Swhackers on them once to make sure your POI is good. I sighted in with short bullet FPs and the POI was off by about 1/2" or so - I think because the Swhackers are so long. You also will not have a very heavy FOC arrow by using the 100 grain heads vs. the 150 grain heads. Heavy FOC tends to help accuracy. On my Maxima Hunters, I refletched with 2" feathers to pick up 3% FOC (now around 16%). Total weight is about 366gr and accuracy improved.

Good Luck and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum!
The 100gr points should be fine, but be sure to check them for accuracy before hunting with them. I'd check groups first with 100gr field points, then try broadheads and see if they group as well as the field points do.

I use aluminum arrows, but I've found a few different broadheads that group as good (or even better) than field points.
