My First Crossbow Deer

Post by robertyb »

Finally got up enough nerve to get out of the ground blind and try climbing in my Summit Viper with my bum shoulder. Did not tear or pull anything loose so I guess I lucked out twice this morning. 51 degrees finally and at 9:18 3 does and three fawns come across a trail I am watching and go towards where I walked in at. One of the smaller does got my walk in trail scent and spooked back onto the ridge with me. Then all of them came back onto the ridge and trotted by me before I could get a shot. They got into the bottom beside my tree about 30 yards from me and were all milling around. Finally the largest doe came back up the trail trying to figure out what was wrong. She stopped behind a leafed out Dogwood tree and I needed two or three more steps before she would hit an opening. I was watching her through the scope on my Excal Vortex and found a hole about the size of a basketball I thought I could shoot through. After a minute or so she turned back towards the other deer and took a step giving me a good look at her left shoulder area through that hole. I hit the trigger at that point and the Swacker broadhead smacked into her loudly. She ran about 25 yards uphill from me, turned and ran back and fell over dead about 20 yards from my stand. Shot was 22 yards by my rangefinder.

Laying where she fell. Exit hole showing.

Me with the doe after draging her to gutting spot. I shot her in the thick stuff behind me.
