OT - went "nuts" at the lathe

Post by wabi »

Nope, not a deer call this time.

My wife wanted me to turn a set of "nesting" boxes for her, but I decided to do something different.
Was going to turn the nut out of myrtle wood and the cap out of walnut, but the turning square was full of holes. :(
Decided to turn both pieces out of walnut.

Might be good to store something small (the hole is 3/4" x 7/8" deep)

Nice work Wabi!
Did you use a mini lathe or a full sized one?

Jet 1014 mini lathe.
I hope to get a full sized lathe before I retire, but that's probably still a few years away.

That's a nice looking lathe. I looked it up online. They say it will extend to 40 inches. That's a lot bigger than I expected a mini to be. It seems that would be plenty for most applications.
It looks like a quality piece of machinery.

It's a well made lathe. Cast iron frame and it's heavy!
I've debated about buying a bed extension for it, and may get one.
The only problem with adding the extension is that I'd have to build a new stand (longer) for it and my shop is already crowded.

Added another variation to the collection. Osage bottom/Walnut cap.
The wife has figured out a practical application for the design. If I turn the nut (bottom) portion a little longer they would make great sewing needle containers.

BTW - the "chatter" design on the cap was unintentional (I let the scraper chatter because I had just re-sharpened it.), but I may now build a "chatter tool" (wooden handle with a flexible steel blade) and use it on them.
