Filled last Buck Tag Sunday

Post by deathbybolt »

I was able to get out this past Sunday. The morning hunt was dead only a few chipmunks and birds.
Went home took care of a few chores, and during that time the wind picked up to a nice +40 mph. I was hesitant about going out thinking it was going to be a waste of time.
I headed out, strapped myself into my tree stand and prepared for a long evening. Luckily the wind was pushing my scent away from the bait and the direction the deer normally come from. Around 6:00pm I had 2 fawn does come in; they hung around until a young 2” spike wondered in. This little guy thought he was king of the woods they way he had his ears back and head cocked to one side. The little does took a look at him and didn’t want any part of him and moved on their way.
About 6:45 I see a bigger doe coming out of the marsh and was moving through the trees towards the hay field, about the time she made it to the field I see another body in the marsh. When it made it to the woods I could see antlers. At that point it looks like the “spork” I saw the other day. He started towards where the doe went and I lost sight of him. About a minute later I see movement to my right. I see a body and the white of antlers.
Thinking it is the “spork” I am really not paying too much attention to it. He starts getting closer and closer. He steps into an opening about 50yds out and it is a nice buck.
The 2” spike is still hanging out. The bigger one slides into the bait area and is standing straight at me about 27yds out. A few minutes go by and he starts turning into position. With the crosshairs of the Beast already on him I squeeze the trigger and watch the Lumenok find its mark. The buck took off towards the hay field and into a little patch of Pine trees about a 100yds out. I look back to where he was standing and do not see my arrow. I am thinking what happened. He was slightly quartered to me and I placed the shot just behind the shoulder. When he took off I never seen the arrow stuck in him.
I waited a few minutes and started getting down out of the tree and the 2” spike is still there. He did not take off until I started walking towards him. I went over to where I shot the buck and I have good blood.
Still no arrow.
So I went back to the house called a buddy and about half hour later we started tracking. Had great blood from the time of impact till time we found him lying in the pines. I turned him over and had a great exit hole. The Crossbow Rage did its job.
Took care of the dirty work, got him hanging

I went back out to look for the arrow. Went to the spot I shot him and about 4 feet beyond and stuck about 6” in the ground I see my bolt. The Lunenok is off.
The only thing I can think of is as it passed through the ribs it turned itself off.

Congrats on a fine buck and a great shot. I've had several Luminocks turn themselves off after passing through a deer, it must pull the nock out a bit as it passes through. I still love seeing them hit a deer though.

Great job on the buck

Congrats on a fine looking buck there. Good luck putting a doe or two in the freezer now. :)
