My Equinox 1st deer harvest.

Post by yooper_man »

This year I bought a new Excalibur Equinox Shadowzone package and last Friday I filled my upper MI archery license with a adult doe.

The shot was 25 yards double lung and she didn,t go 40 yards and with a good bloodtrail. I used a stock firebolt arrow with 150 grain boltcutter broadhead and Excalibur flemish string. The bolt passed through and stuck into the ground.

I like the setup, but I think I will upgrade my Shadowzone scope with a Leupold 1-4,x20 or 2-7x33 scope. I don,t use the yardage cheverons on my scope, so I feel a Leupold german #1 would be an quick aiming post set at 25 yard zero..

Congrats on your 1st deer with the beast! I have a new Equinox and I tried to install the new Leupold Crossbones scope and the vertical adjustment was all the way to the end and still not on target. I contacted Leupold and they suggested a shim under the front scope mount. I sent the Leupold back and re-installed the Varizone and it was spot on without any adjustment.

What are you looking for in a new scope that the present one does not provide? Thanks

Thank you everyone, I love this crossbow and so does my 14 year old daughter. We still need too fill her archery license.

Deerstalker,

I have too tell you honestly, I didn't feel too good when I looked at the Shadow-zone scope box that came with my package and saw it was made in China. Also, I just don't have a need for the adjustable multiplex crosshair system. I used the center crosshair sighted in at 20 yards, but the shot was 25 yards and hit only a little bit low. Don't get me wrong the scope functioned flawlessly.

I know the Leupold would be better for clarity and quality since I own several. I want too have Leupold take a 2-7 scope and install a German #1 reticle and set to be parallax free at 40 yards. I would sight-in the post to 25 yards.

Here is a sample of Leupold's German #1 reticle.

Congratulations on your deer!

I have a Leupold 2-7x shotgun scope on my Phoenix and it works great for me.

I can remember when the old "post & crosshair" reticles were sometimes used by mounting the scope upside-down so the post was on top. If you needed to hold over for elevation the post wasn't covering the target that way.

Congrats on your deer. You will love the clarity of the Leupold the Excal scopes can't came close. I switched to a 40 mm Bushnell Banner and sight mine in at 30 yards and the bottom of the crosshair is dead on 40 it just worked out that way. The Banner is a low light scope and is a lot brighter than the Shadowzone or Lumi zone that I had.

Good Luck

I will probably go with the Leupold shotgun scope, since the heavy reticle will perform in low light without any electronics.

I still like the idea of the German #1 or German #4.
