"front of centre" - how much weight is forward of the centre of the arrow.

Any thoughts on as to whether a bale of hay will make a good set up for target practice?

Never used one, but my impression is that a bolt would pass through and keep on going, or, get buried so deep you'd have a hard time finding it. You need something to stop the penetration pretty quick. You don't want the vanes to hit the surface and get damaged. There are lots of targets out there for sale.

I just use an empty cardboard box, like a wine box, and fill it with layers of flat newspapers, magazines, phone book etc. The bolts are still hard to get out, but it works in a pinch. If you leave a gap in the stuffing, you can "inch" the layers off the shaft to back it out.

To get started, get a good sized box and stuff with plastic grocery bags or better yet with old rags.
Remove all buttons, zippers and hard objects.
Rip the rags in strips and then jam as much as you can into the box.
I mean stand on the stuffing until you can't get any more into the box.
Then close and seal with packing tape.
Draw a bunch of dots on one face of the target and shoot away.
Two finger removal of arrows.
BTW, don't shoot at the same dot twice unless you want an expensive souvenir.

I'd get a good bag target like this one.

X2

Used to have an onion bag stuffed with old ratty blankets that worked good for field tips. Hay is a bad idea unless you like re-fletching your arrows.

I've had good luck with boltcutter/firebolt combo, but many swear by slicks. :)

I have another question.Do you guys shoot bolts at targets with your broadhead?I see a lot of people talking about field tips for targets and I understand that aspect. But I dont see anyone talking about shooting bolts with broadheads at targets.
