Anyone tried the air comppressor method for skinning

Post by Chuck AA »

Hi

New to the board, just got my first crossbow deer with an equinox yesterday(many rifle shot deer). It is now froze in my garage as I was hunting at home. Normally up at my farm we have a few guys and tug the frozen hide off while skinning with a knife. Has anyone tried the air compressor method on a deer that has been gutted?

That is what I kind of was asking. From what I have read you insert a cople of 1" cuts into the hide and insert the air gun nozzle. I am asking as well if this can been done on a gutted deer or not and where to place the cuts. If you google it comes up with mostly southern US hunters using it on hogs and deer. But I thought it should work on a northern deer. Anyway like I said not used to skinning a deer at home, so I have the compressor there and will try. Will let you hunters know.

A friend traps hogs and uses compressed air to skin 'em. Makes about 4 or 5 1/4 in. slot cuts in'em and sticks an air nozzle in and touches it off. He says they blow up like a basketball, and then the hide slips off real easy. Never tried it myself tho.

I , personally think that OIL from the compressor could come out the hose and get in contact with the meat. I , myself would not no it! :(

Great point, there are oil and water filters that may be put inline to prevent contamination, and a separate hose and air chuck wouldn't hurt. I exercise this for painting, moisture and oil don't bother my air tools, but they can easily destroy a paint job.

This was a concern I had with this method also? :?

This site has some good info on air skinning
http://www.airskinner.com/index.cfm?event=faq

"Frozen animals have been found to require slightly more air pressure; 150 PSI works well."

"Lack of sufficient air volume is the number one reason the Air Skinner might not work effectively. PSI is not the only deciding factor when it comes to the Air Skinner. You should have at least 5.0 CFM with a 3/8" air hose to get the best results."
Above quotes are from the airskinner site.

They recommend field dressing the game before air skinning.

Unless you have an oil-free compressor of course.

i could see that being nice IF your skinning the head for a mount....i used to train doing taxidermy and skinning a deer head is a P.I.T.A....using that air trick on a frozen deer i'm not sure bout either....i get all my deer skinned within hours of it's death and just a few tugs on the ends that are loose already and it just peels off like a banana  ........bob
