Exhausting Day with Equinox

Post by UPSMAN »

After switching over to blazer vanes, I took them out for their first trial run. That's where the trouble started.Set up at 20 yds and shot my first bolt. 4 inches right. 2nd and 3rd bolt produced same result. After making scope adjustments the next group was 4 inches left. I was sure that I did not over correct so I shot another group. One was dead center, one 4 inches left, and one 4 inches right. Was beginning to think the new blazers were crap. Got out my other 6 GT bolts that had 4 inch duravanes. The first 2 were right on the money but the other 4 were all over the target. At this point I realized that something had to be wrong. A thorough inspection revealed my problem. The bottom screws on my hawke scope mount were loose. The scope was moving left and right with each shot. Had to take scope off the rail to get access to the loose screws. Re-tightened with loctite and returned to the bench. The 2nd go round produced much better results. 1st group was 3 inches right so I made scope adjustment and the next group was on the money. Had a few other issues but managed to deal with them without too much trouble. My brace height kept changing after every couple of shots. I do have a new string that only had about 15 shots on it. I left the bow cocked for 3 days after putting the new string on the bow. After today's 50 shots it seems to be getting better but I have noticed some serving wear on the right side where the claw holds the serving. It ate my first string in the same spot. May need to send my bow to Danny for some kind of claw repair. Only other issue I had was a damaged bolt. Have no idea what happened but one of my blazer vanes was totally ripped off the bolt. The bolt missed the target completely. Found the bolt 50 yds down range embedded in an oak tree. When i removed it from the tree, the brass insert was still buried in the tree. Not sure what tore the vane off but it may have been the arm that holds the bolt to the rail. After all was said and done, I think the blazers are keepers. My final group was pretty good. Guess I will strip and re-fletch my other bolts.Image

Sometimes we have days when nothing seems to go right. I'm glad it wasn't a scope issue other than some loose screws.

Reading the serving wear problems, wrap some very fine emery cloth around a 1/4 dowel and polish the latches, particularly the outside edges.

I also shoot the Equinox. One of the better vanes that I have used are the Goat Tuff Optivane 2. They stick super easy and are very durable. I have had plenty of trouble getting the blazer vanes to adhere.
