Indiana Deer Regulation Proposed Changes - Comment Now

Post by Woody Williams »

The new Indiana DNR rule proposals are up on the Natural Resources Commission website. These proposed changes were preliminarily adopted by the NRC on November 20, 2012.

They will be up for final adoption at the NRC January meeting at
January 15, 2013 (10:00 a.m., EST (9:00 a.m., CST), Ballroom, The Garrison, Fort Harrison State Park, Indianapolis.

PERSONAL OBSERVATION – I have heard from a very reliable source that some folks will be asking the NRC to amend that request to a start date of November 1 to end at the start of the firearm season. That would basically remove legal, license buying crossbowers from a significant portion of their own season. IE, the pre-rut. Personally, to me that is anti-hunting.

That basically says that their request is not about “heritage”, a “season of their own” or even “good deer management”. It is all about “buck hunting” for themselves. Please comment on that.

The inclusion of the crossbows this year have been a win-win for the state of Indiana. We are recruiting more hunters, retaining more older hunters, helping to manage the deer herd and has given a boost to the state’s economy. To step backwards would be a shame.

Please contact the NRC voicing you own opinions on that and the following -

Thanks for bringing this to everybodys attention Woody, already voiced my opinion there, hope it does some good.
Fellow IN hunter here and love the way the rules are set up this year, hope they leave it alone.
Love the 3 deer combo deal this year on license's plus it covers you so you don't have to buy a sepporate crossbow permit.

I chipped in as well. What bothered me as much as the crossbow exclusion was the lack of squirrel hunting time this gives you before you start running into deer hunters, and deer season is more than long enough as it is. Guess if it passes I will just have to elbow in there amongst them. I will not bow hunt until October 1st no matter what is legal, unless we have an unusual early, very cold snap.
