got my bow in today!...but I have a problem

Post by Pegasus »

So I decided to get an Equinox and it came in today! when I got home I waxed the string and got to shooting it, after 20 or so shots later the string snapped as I shot it, but the arrow still made it into the target as if nothing happened, so my question is, what the hell happened? Paid a grand for the thing and the string breaks after 20 shots :x :x :x

Where did the string break? Pictures would really help.

No clue, can't find the dammed thing, which is weird because there is crusty snow outside you would think its easy to find. I'm gonna try again tomorrow in the daylight.

Just a guess then. I would think that the claws that hold the string in place probably have a sharp burr on them that ended up cutting your string. Did you notice any string wear before the string broke?

Another thought. You said you can't find the string. Are you certain it broke? Sometimes if you do not have the arrow fully set against the string you can get a partial dryfire and the string can jump off the limbs. The arrow goes out but not at full speed. Does the arrow by any chance have a wrinkled vane on it now?

No, my arrows are fine, the arrow from my shot hit the target just fine, so my guess its it happened shortly after the arrow left the deck

When you first install your string there should be a few twists in it. The temptation is to install it without any twists. If you do then only half of the strands will be doing almost all the work. Install the string with 4 or 5 twists and let the bow do the work of elongating the string.
Do you have an extra string?

The dealer put it together for me, and the riser group comes pre strung from the factory doesn't it? I'm gonna bring back to the shop tomorrow and get it inspected. Oh almost forgot, I checked the limb tips and found that one of them has a rough edge next to the string groove, I think it may be the culprit

I would find the string first to establish if it in fact broke. If it isn't, inspect it and re-install it with some twists as suggested.

Be sure to look behind you for the string.

How was the brace height? If too close to the riser, then it could have been hitting the riser and that will break a string in about 20 shots . . .do you have dampening system installed? If so, then forget the string hitting the riser.

My guess is, the string did not break. Somehow, it slipped off the limb. I have broken strings before and I always found at least half of it.

Last time I dryfired my bow the string went behind me by about 30 feet.

Not a clue. I was outside of the barn on my shooting bench. I dry-fired and lost the string. Looked for half an hour and give up. Walked in inside and the string was sitting on my quad.

Squirrels have a sense of humor, don't they. :)

I'm guessing that the string comes completely off during the recoil of the limbs. Probably slips off one side on the forward motion, then flips off completely on the recoil.

I found one off to the side once too . . .I saw it fly over there, 20 feet.

Just start circling the wagons.
