2012 Excalibur buck

Post by Ibex »

Ibex scores again.
I got this 5 pointer Nov 6 while hunting in a ground blind. The buck was broadside at 49 yards. I know my 436 gr arrow hits 6” high at 50 yards so I put the 50 yard crosshair (Vortex 3x crossbow scope ) just under the belly and fired. The 2” Marden Vortex 125 gr mini max steel expandable cut a 2” slot in the side of the buck and a nice 2” cut through the heart. The Goldtip arrow broke off inside the deer and somehow bored a hole through the neck. Very little blood for 20 yards and then tons of blood for the next 10 yards. He only made it 30 yards. My previous 3 does with the ibex were shot at 30 yards. This is my first Ibex buck.

I sight in for 30 yards and my 20 and 40 yard crosshairs are right on. These crosshairs are evenly spaced. The next crosshair has a larger gap (is not evenly spaced) maybe because the engineer figured the arrow was dropping more from 40 to 50 yards. All I can say is the arrows group tight but 6 inches high at 50 yards. Go figure.

I was in an insulated blind sitting back from the window and did not use a rest as the stove pipe was in the way. I thought the insulated blind might muffle the sound of the crossbow firing so I risked the long shot.

So what do you think about that large hole in the neck?

That could very well be as I did not notice any damage on the far side. I found the broken arrow and broadhead when I reached up to cut the windpipe. I was lucky to not get cut.

I suspect at that distance the buck dropped and turned to run off when the arrow struck....congrats on your buck!

That is very possible but it would mean that if the buck had not ducked the arrow would have passed well underneath him, which is unlikely due to the accuracy of the Ibex. Of course I could have made a bad shot. know something odd happened because the other 3 deer I shot were complete pass throughs and this one was not. You guys and gals are probably right that 50 yards is to far.

The arrow was broken off clean with no fibers.

Not sure what caused the arrow defection inside this deer but it sure did a good job on him. Congrats on a nice buck. :)
