Weak limbs or limbs breaking in?
Hey all,
First, Happy New Year!
I need some technical input. I have had my Vortex for about two months now. When I picked it up from the archery shop, I had to let quite a few twists out of the stock string to get it in between the two marks on the flight deck. It was equally adjusted in between the two marks when I finished. I recently added the S5 system, fortunately no adjustment was needed.
Now, I cleaned the Vortex this evening and noticed the string to have creeped to the line farthest from the riser ad S5 system. I have been in the treestand quite a bit, so the Vortex has been setting cocked a lot...is this a problem?
Are my limbs getting weak or just breaking in?
I thought by now, at the least, the string would have stretched, but it doesn't look that way. This seems odd.

Check your limb bolts to make sure they are tight!!

Re: Weak limbs or limbs breaking in?
It's your string creeping the limbs should be fine, just add a few more turns to readjust the brace height.

Re: Weak limbs or limbs breaking in?
Read you post twice and I'm still not clear on which direction the string has moved.
If it's moving toward the riser that is perfectly normal. A dacron string will never completely stop elongating. It will slow down, but never stop.
If it's moving away from the riser it's not the string!
You have a problem that needs attention!
Could be limb bolts or could be something more serious (like limb failure).

To clarify...the string is in deed moving away from the riser. So, as you have written, I guess I have a problem? What is the problem? All bolts are tight.wabi wrote:Read you post twice and I'm still not clear on which direction the string has moved.

Where is this bow stored? Somewhere near a heat source?

No way...it's in the house. It goes two places, in the house or in the woods behind the house. No! It's not stored in the heat, car or anything as such.

Re: Weak limbs or limbs breaking in?
You don't list a location in your profile, but I would recommend giving Excalibur / 800-463-1817 (or Dan Miller if you live in the US / 740-483-2312) a call before shooting the bow again.
It could be a limb problem and I would get professional advice (Excalibur warranty dept.) as to what the possibilities (and remedies) are.

I did to. This is most unusual? I can't offer any suggestions other than to get your crossbow checked out before shooting it again.wabi wrote:Read you post twice and I'm still not clear on which direction the string has moved.

Re: Weak limbs or limbs breaking in?
Easy test, get another Excel string and try it. Leave the S5 off until you beat this one..........
I've read tons of brace height posts/questions on this forum, your problem is a 1st for me........Let us know what's up please?

Re: Weak limbs or limbs breaking in?
Hey all...I asked "Bill T" about this issue. He responded with the follwoing:
"I honestly have no idea why, you are right, it is normal for the string to stretch a little, but it will make zero difference in the performance of your crossbow. A few thousands here or there is not really substantial as far as either sound reduction or velocity are concerned, just shoot and enjoy!..........Bill"
Now...with response from experienced shooters such as you all, I now have a concern. Is Excalibur the same company they once were? I gues their moto is, "it's not a concern unless it deals with their new generation crossbow, or unless someone gets hurt." I am not happy with Excalibur at this point. I have delt with small issues since I purchased this "new" crossbow and over looked them. I have bought things to fix these issues with this "new" crossbow, which I think is Bunk!
I re-read my post and think it is pretty cut and dry. With no room for misinterpretation.
Bill...says, "I have no idea." What...? Did he really say that? Bill has been building these crossbows for a long time and not much has changed. Then Bill says, "you are right." If that is the case, then where is the concern for your customer's safety! Bill says, "it is normal." Did he read the post correctly? Is it normal for the string to stretch or is it normal for the limbs to get weak and fold back? If it was just the string stretching, then I AGREE that it is normal and I would put some twists back into the string to remedy the issue. But for the limbs to get weak...I DO NOT think it is normal. Bill says, "shoot and enjoy." Well...I guess I'll enjoy it until I eat a piece of 200lb limb and it exits through the back of my skull.
Now...with the educated response from you all and with this non-candy response I get from Excalibur, I have a concern. I bought an Excalibur for its craftmanship, its dedicated research, and its customer service.
Bunk!...I say! Not a happy customer right now! Now I guess Excalibur has went "big business", so the company it once was is no longer. Sad, sad, sad to say.
Thank you all for your responses and concern with this issue. I'm not sure what I will do at this point.
Signed, unhappy customer!

Re: Weak limbs or limbs breaking in?
How about posting a picture of the string for us so we can try and tell what might have happened. I would bet good $$$ that Bill T. thinks you are talking about normal string stretch.

I agree, take pictures of the string moving the wrong way for normal stretching. I have had quick fast responses to every concern I had from either Bill or Peter, plus countless responses from the other experts here.robertyb wrote:How about posting a picture of the string for us so we can try and tell what might have happened.
