Would a hole help ? (Arrow vane related)

Post by JT of PA »

I am thinking of conducting an experiment.

Take a hole punch and put a hole in one of the three Blazer vanes on an arrow. To me, the hole would create drag and cause the arrow to twist faster ... a sort of poor man's Quick Spin design from New Archery Products (NAP).

This arrow would only be used for target shooting.

So is there a hole in my logic or is it worth an experiment?

Any insight would be appreciated.

looks like a new test! for me if anything shoots better than regular blazers my shootings not good enough for me to tell. I think blazers already are more accurate than my shooting ! I guess I,ll get the hole punch out and perforate an arrow an see what happens????? lots of holes!

I think you would need to keep the balance uniform, punching a hole in one may cause the arrow to wobble in flight. It's probably worth trying if you have a large enough area to catch the arrow if goes wonky and off target.

If ya are going to use the arrow for hunting, i would think the hole would cause a whirring sound in flight, don't know for sure, but if ya do it, listen and see if ya can hear anything. JMO

That would be my first thought.
Creating drag and slowing it down.
I doubt it would spin more.

If you want more spin then give it more helical!!

Aerodynamically speaking I think not. And arrow spins because the vane is glued offset to the longitudinal axis of the arrow shaft and the direction of flight.the relative wind created by the forward motion of the arrow against the exposed SIDE of the vane aaplies a force to the vanewhich spins the arrow. Punching a hole in it will actually decrease the amount of surface area encountering the relative wind which in theory should result in less of a spinning force. You might get more drag but it is essentially the wrong type of drag (acting in the wrong plane or direction). Also you don't know what will happen to the turbulent air created by the hole. Air might flow thru the hole and strike another vane. Having said this I am almost willing to bet that if you experiment with the change would be negligible.

If you set up the arrow with no offset or hellical then you can pretty much disregard everything I've just said. I still don't think there would be mch of a diff but it would be nice to know.

Just my opinion.

Will probably leave this one on the back burner for a fit. Just got some arrows cut down in length and will experiment with them for now.

Thanks everyone for your insight and input. All the best.
