Good luck to you Bearclan.

I have no issues with the native people being allowed to hunt deer here. I grew up hunting, fishing, and trapping my entire life and understand a lot of the heritage.

What I do have a problem with is policy makers limiting Ontarians from hunting and fishing various areas in general. Its clear as a nation, that there is little to no appreciation for traditional hunting and fishing in this country. The liberal city types don't see a need for it and thus actively attempt to hinder and remove opportunities wherever possible. There need to be more opportunities to harvest resources where the populations can handle it...instead, what happens...we put money into hunting and fishing licences and the money ends up where? With more and more cuts in the MNR and yokals in Toronto making policy decisions for the entire province that have never even been in the outdoors.

so it was an eventful weekend in st Catherine, sat morning was quite the dog and pony show, was good to see protestors out, had park hikers, animal rights hunters and plain old bigots out with their signs having their say. they had people sneaking past MNR folks and running through the park chasing deer- the deer were running everywhere. i sat in my climber on a ridge with a well used trail. I had a huge doe run out of thicket 30 yards away- no shot couldn't stop her. then i watched 20 deer run by on next ridge top. Around 3pm had 6 does and 1 yearling buck come up over ridge about 100 yards away- i called with fawn bleat and biggest doe came to investigate but she got down wind and stopped at 50 yards no shot. they dropped into bush and that was the end of my day. other guys managed to take 3 mature does. Sunday i was in at 530 and went deep along hydro cut, set up under a hydro tower on last ridge in thick brush on a well worn trail coming out of pines on both sides. at 830 i saw movement to my right, a big buck looking around. i hooked my release and froze; when he came across behind tower leg i drew and shot him though the heart at 12 yards (used slick trick magnums out of a Bowtech flatliner i bought from our resident Arrow maker Big John) he ran 20 yards and dropped over edge of ravine- 30 min wait and i found him 20 yrds down steep ravine in pines. after a 30 min drag up hill (i thought i was gonna have a heart attack!! ) MNR Biologist aged him at 4 years old 225 lbs and a 150 class rack- healthy no ticks- couple healing cuts probably from fighting. I was only one to take an animal on Sunday, our guys and protestors managed to chase most of deer out of hunt zone-i saw 50-60 deer run across hydro cut heading north flat out then i saw runners jumping hollering waving there arms right behind them - looked like an old Benny Hill Episode.

Excellent Bearclan!!!!! 8)
I was hoping you would connect. I am an avid user of Short Hills along with my last and present dog. Been in there for years. A cull of the park has been in discussion many times before. I am glad the hunt took place. I wish I was more Native than I am, so I could possibly have been involved. But it's okay, I have properties around there to use. As stated before in this thread, "This is not a good topic" and "wrong Forum" but it is here. I am curious as to the original poster and his Forum name, "IH8ATTN" considering this would bring alot of attention!!! And by his comments, may have been one of the runners chasing the deer around.
LOL!!! But CONGRATS to Bearclan!!! Cant wait to see pics!!!

I thought you'd get more than 4 this weekend, no offense but that's embarrassing. I thought you guys would get atleast 10 with or without protestors . The amount of deer in that area you could go in there with a hockey stick and a bag of apples and take home 3. I guess you guys have one more weekend and that's it...for now.

I'm too chubby to be running around and I was busy making honey garlic Bambi and Bullwinkle sausage that weekend lol. I couldn't be bothered to get arrested, too much to lose plus it's freedom of speech, I wanted people to be aware of this and I made my opinion, simple as that. I may have put it in the wrong section but bear clan was planning to use his Excalibur so I guess it has some worth in this section.

With respect, I disagree.

What is DESPERATLY needed is a frank and civil discussion. We shouldn't be intimidated by the fear that bigots may take ownership of our conversation. We need to talk.

If the Park was formerly closed to ALL hunting, and if the park was overpopulated by deer, something had to be done.

If hunting was the solution to deal with the overpopulation, that's fine.

Now, hunters can fall into two categories. One is Sport hunters, and the other is Subsistence hunters. If you are a Subsistence hunter, you DEPEND on hunting as your means of getting food. Everyone else is a Sport hunter.

If the Park was opened for hunting to Sport hunters, it should have been open to ALL sport hunters.
