OT I was offered a challenge

Post by kd8jgu »

I am pulling out of pasture for a few weeks hogs getting a little to skittish.
Talking with owner about Texas dropping draw weight to 40lbs.
He states you could not kill a hog with that light of a draw weight.
He states you would need at least 70lbs.
So kids coming down on the 1st and they are bringing my T/D recurve with,
45lb, 50, and 55lb limbs.
Challenge is if I can drop a hog with each poundage.
He will purchase and setup 3 new tripod stands
Equipment will be.

not sure about the 40lb draw weight but I think it can be done if the hog is close enough. He is definitely wrong about the 70lb minimum. I have seen many a dead hog that fell to a 55lb verticle draw bow.

The key factor is the sharpness of the broadhead IMO.
Second is the ability to put it where it needs to go.
I would probably opt for the 2 blade head.

45# Recurve, sharp 2 blade broadhead, well placed shot within 15 yards - I have no doubt that you'll put a few down.

Put a Gold Tip 110 gr brass insert in that 2117 and let the games begin.I know lots of people that killed deer back in the day with 40# recurves. Never shot a hog but if a bear razorhead can passthrough a big buck you should be fine.

A cut on contact broadhead will help with the penetration as well.I think you might even get pass throughs with the right shot and at the right range. I'm a bettin' on you.

I agree . . .those four blades will do a lot of cutting, but, also use a lot of energy . . .I'd go with a smaller blade and you will need to place it very well.

Good luck.

Sounds like a fun challenge. I think he's way off on the 70 lb minimum. While I would prefer more than a 40 lb draw weight I believe a well placed shot at the correct range would take one down.

Good luck. :)

It's all about the energy. There is a guy on Youtube (BreeztOaks Farms) who does alot of shooting into dead hogs to show the difference in penetration between his "deer bow" = 280fps, 400gr arrow and his "hog bow" = 260fps, 700gr arrow, and he can get a passthru with the big arrow and a Magnus Stinger 2 blade. That is my broadhead of choice for my hunt.
