55 years -2 years in army started with 20Ga single shot and long bow 6' 6" strung and to heavy a pull for me to get a full draw at age 12. Now it is a Vortex and a savage striker hand gun in .308 cal always hunted in Wisconsin in +80 deg to -22 deg and sun, rain, fog, wind and 24" of snow. Always good hunting.

Deer since 14. Let's see, that makes it 34 years. Squirrells, quail, rabbits since big enough to walk with Dad.
Re: Deer Hunting In Years
50 years for me. The first 19 years I spent walking in the woods and never got a deer. I then began hunting from blinds with bait and got my first deer the 20th year. Since then I get one or two a year. I am a meat hunter so many of my deer are does. I hunted with Bear a recurve using fiberglass arrows that were really heavy as they were supposed to be better than cedar arrows ( aluminum arrows were not available), but never got a deer with the recurve. Compound bows worked pretty good but took a month each year to master and then when I put on heavy hunting clothes my accuracy would go to pot. I now hunt 3 seasons: bow, gun and muzzleloading. My favorite weapon for hunting is my Ibex and it loves GT Laser II arrows with 125 gr mini max steel broadheads. I bought the Ibex because the Ten Point crossbows have a very noisy safety and I liked the simplicity.

Re: Deer Hunting In Years
I am not sure what year they opened the deer season here. I was either 14 or 15 though. So that would be 48 or 49 years ago.

Re: Deer Hunting In Years
wow, great to see so many hunters, experienced or not, on here.. probably why this is such a great forum with such helpful knowledgeable members.. i wanted to add, that in my 8 years deer hunting with bow and muzzleloader, i have been lucky enough to take 9 deer with the bow and 1 with the muzzleloader ( 4 years hunting)... this was my personal best with 3 deer with my excal pheonix.. my best before this was a double that i shot with my hoyt a few years back.. shot a big doe and button buck , had them both down and out by 7:10 am..lol

Re: Deer Hunting In Years
I'm on full disability so I can use my crossbow the full archery season. I have a special permit that I have to carry with me when I hunt. You are correct we can only have a max draw weight of 200lb. I to wish they would lift the poundage. Sure would like to have a Matrix 355. Here is the info from the IDNR.DeerDestroyer wrote:38 For Me. Enjoy it More each season. Question for You Geodehunter..There in Illinois I noticed that the second part of the archery season You now can use a crossbow. Is everyone still under the same 200# maximum draw weights as the regulations stated for those past 62 years of age or handicapped or can You use higher poundage crossbows now? Just curious as I use an Exomax. Would love for the DNR there to take those restrictions off.
A legally permitted archery hunter may use a crossbow from the second Monday following Thanksgiving through the end of the archery hunting seasons also certain disabled persons with a special crossbow permit (see page 37 of the Hunting and Trapping Digest) or persons 62 years of age or older with photo ID (no special crossbow permit required) can hunt with crossbows. These individuals may hunt game species with crossbows during seasons allowing the use of archery equipment.
Crossbows shall:
•have a minimum peak draw weight of 125 pounds and a maximum peak draw weight of 200 pounds.
•have a minimum overall length (from butt of stock to front of limb) of 24 inches.
•have a working safety.
•be used with fletched bolts or arrows of not less than 14 inches in length (not including point).
•use broadheads that may have fixed or expandable cutting surfaces, but they must have a minimum 7/8 inch diameter when fully opened. Broadheads with fixed cutting surfaces must be metal or flint-chert-or obsidian-knapped; broadheads with expandable cutting surfaces must be metal.
•NOT use electronic tracking systems utilizing radio telemetry.
