Matrix 355 Speed

Post by rattlerun »

I have the new Matrix 355 with string set about 1/8 inch back from the R.E.D.S. system. Will be shooting a new Boo Flemish String. GTIII's 18 inch arrows, 110 brass inserts, 2 inch Blazer Vanes with helical fletched, firenocks, and either 100 or 125 heads. I don't have a chronograph. Could anyone give me a ballpark figure for the speed I should expect.

Just checking a single DIABLO [401 gr] today from my 355, using BOO Flemish string at a constant 327 fps. Right hand offset. By the way varying the spacing of the bumper had zero- NADA effect on the velocity!

Whoa nelly, 327 fps, i really thought they would get 340fps. If'en 327 wid a 400 gr arrow is all they will put out. I'll save my $900.

My chrono unit is from the late 80's. The screen windows are very small and on a three foot beam. A bit hairy to get all lined up, but manageable. I have never used it on anything but firearms before, but have no reason to doubt its accuracy.

I ran my first arrow tests for BOO with AstroFlight and XS2 Flemish strings as well as the stock Excal. string that came on the 355.
Used stock a (401 gr) Diablo and a (397 gr) B/E with SK-300 vanes to test with. Flemish strings were 326 with XS2 and 327 with AstroFlight for Diablo. B/E was 329 with AstroFlight string.
Stock string, the one Excal probably based their claim on, was 330 on Diablo and 331 on B/E's. Excal bases their claims on a 350 grain arrow, not a 400 grain one.

Sorry if that disappoints anyone, but that was what it was.
Ten fps is hardly worth getting an ulcer over  I'm happy!

I am shooting the Equinox and I don't have a chronograph, but from other chrony reviews that I am shooting in the approx 330 FPS range with Excalibur's Dyna Flight string, Excalibur's factory firebolts and 150 grain points/broadheads.

All this worry over a few fps!.But your not alone!Rifle shooters are just as bad!
Super speed MAGNUMS,But I bet more deer n game are taken with a 30/30,or a
45/70cal.bullit of a decent weight.at a moderate volocity.
If your bolts going all the way thro you'll only have to look for it!
Any stick will make a bow!But it takes a good stick to make an arrow!'

I started this thread just so I had a starting point on adjusting my scope. Nothing more.

Its OK. I used the information I gathered on velocity for the same reason. When I had the Shadow-Zone scope on my Equinox, I set it just past the 325 FPS mark. I am not a speed freak, but I needed a starting point for sighting in. The velocity setting was perfect and the scopes ballistic chevrons worked as advertised.

The energy with my current setup is more than enough for anything I hunt. I shot a large adult white-tailed doe at 25 yards and the 20 inch Firebolt tipped with 150 grain Boltcutter broad head passed through both lungs and was found buried at least 6 inches into the ground. The deer travels approx 40 yards at the end of a good blood trail.

Sure but speed wasn't the focus. It was a starting point for setting the speed dial on the Excalibur scope in order to use the ballistic chevron marks for shooting.

Additionally I also used the arrow selection chart found in the Excalibur instruction manual. Its shows 335 FPS for my Equinox 225 lb draw weight and 150 grain tip using #1989 Flemish Dyna Flight string. Equals 104 ft lb of KE (kinetic energy).

http://www.excaliburcrossbow.com/uploads/manual.pdf

This manual isn't for the Matrix, but I am sure the Matrix instruction manual provided with the crossbow has similar arrow selection chart to determine FPS and KE.
