Guardian ADF scope mount

Post by Raymond »

Hello Folks,
I love the idea of having the new Excalibur Guardian Anti-Dry Scope Mount on my Equinox. So last night I felt pretty good and I got started on it, I attempted to remove the Allen screws. I took a brand new Allen wrench and made certain that it was well seated in the screw hole and attempted to removed the first Allen screw. But with no luck, the head started turning a lighter color, almost white and it would not budge, and yes the screw hole was damaged. Tried for a second Allen screw and achieved the same ending with that screw.
So now I have to send the mainframe to Excalibur HQ, and have the four Allen screws removed. I called Dawn this Monday morning and left a message, and it being Victoria Day is a holiday, so they are closed. She will call as soon as possible that's a for sure though. Dawn is a heck of a good lady.
That is one flaw in my opinion, that I would like to see Excalibur HQ change, and start using a different type of screw heads that the crossbow user could remove themselves if at all possible. Why not use the T20 TORX wrench headed screws instead if they would work? Would they not work and allow the Excalibur crossbow owners the ability to remove these types of screws themselves if they need to?
Thanks,
Raymond

I have run into the same problem. 2 of mine turned easily. The back 2 both stripped. I plan on cutting a cross grove in the heads with a dremel tool and using a screwdriver to get them out.

robertyb,
I haven't got a dremel tool. But what about taking the crossbow to a machine shop and having them cut a cross groove in the screw heads and using a screw driver to get them out?
Thank you,

Get some heat on them with a mini blow torch as well.
I replaced mine with some 8-32 allen headed bolts that used a sensible sized Allen key to tighten/remove.
The only trouble was they were stainless not black and I had to cut them down with the Dremel to make them the right length,
If they're too long they will bear on the string claws.

I actually heated mine till they glowed and they still would not break loose. I think someone at Excal had a tube of RED Threadlocker the day they put mine together.

I worked at the store where I bought both of my Excalibur crossbows. I followed Bill T's directions on how to assemble the Excalibur crossbows, and I used the blue loctite. I assembled all of the crossbows that came in our door at the store the same way.
I have four T20 TORX Button Socket Head Screws to use when I mount my Guardian ADF scope mount. All four T20 TORX screws are cut to the same length so I cannot mix the front ones up with the back ones to cause any problems such as having any of the screws too long that they bear on the string claws. My memory isn't so good anymore and that is the reason I wanted to get an ADF for my Equinox and thought it would be a good idea to have those four screws cut to the same length. I know that it will not void any of my warranty because I telephone Excalibur HQ and asked Dawn, and she said that it would not void my warranty by using these T20 TORX Screws. So once I get the Allen screws removed I will be happy.
Thank You,

Raymond, try a center punch. Put a hit on the edge of the screw heads, then angle the punch to loosen the screws and give them a few light taps.........

Hard to describe in words, but it works......

Hey Folks,
Thanks for all your recommendations and help folks. I have decide to send the mainframe into Excalibur HQ and have them remove the four Allen screws for me. I have talked to our Customer Service/Warranty Representative Dawn Douglas this morning and she has kindly already sent me all the paperwork that I need to get the mainframe on it's way to Excalibur HQ. So Thursday morning I have a doctors appointment at the hospital in town and I will stop at the Canada Post Office in Yarmouth and send it on its way. I will install the Guardian Anti-Dry Fire Scope Mount myself once I receive the mainframe back from Excalibur HQ, using four T20 TORX screws instead of the Allen screws. Thank you Dawn for the prompt service you gave me, it is very much appreciated.

So it is best before committing to changing to the Guardian is to check the mounting screws first to see if they can be removed.

If they remove easliy then consider using a different replacement screw to mount the Guardian with. ie Torx 20 head.

I am puzzled however why Excaliber would not include replacement mounting screws with the Guardian or make available ones that are better suited for the purpose. Guardan or not. The cost can't be that prohibit can it?

Unfortunately due to some medical issues that I have now it is easier for me to let Excalibur HQ remove those screws for me, otherwise, I would have removed them myself. I will be installing the Guardian ADF scope mount with some new T20 TORX Button Socket Head screws, when the mainframe returns from Excalibur HQ. I am looking forward to having the Guardian ADF scope mount installed on my Equinox.

TheTinker had the same problem, so I quickly took the small Allen head screws off my Equinox scope base. All mine came out without issues. I replaced all scope base and Dissipator Bar pads mounting screws with the ones below.

I bought some black oxide 8-32 x 3/8" button head T-20 TORX screws.

Hey Folks,
Good news, I was feeling right fine as kind the other night after my Equinox was totally dissembled. I was getting ready to package the mainframe up for a trip to Excalibur HQ to get them there scope mount screws removed because I couldn't get two of them buggers out. And I said to me self, "Self, you can get them screws out of that scope mount".
So I went to my tickle trunk and fetched me a new Allen wrench and and small hammer and I came back to the work desk in my man cave and I removed the first two easy ones. Piece a cake.  . Number 3, well, not so bad, found where I had the best grip remaining on the head of that screw and I place the Allen wrench in there and tap it in place and gave a couple of extra light taps and then I held the wrench close the the screw and I turn with the other end and the screw turn, number 3 was out.
Now number 4 was a little bit harder but basically the same. So I was lucky after all and I removed all 4 of those screws and I saved myself the cost of shipping my mainframe to Excalibur HQ,    . Now that made me happy I must say. When I can save a few bucks it does make a big help for this household. So once again, thanks to newbie for the four T20 TORX screws and two pieces of new rope for my backup rope cocker and a thank you to SWAMP DONKY for sending me the Guardian ADF Scope Mount. It fit like a charm. And thanks to all of you who gave me ideas of how to go about removing those tough screws. Also a thank you to Dawn at Excalibur HQ who was right on the ball, ready and willing to take care of me and my problem and the little favor that she is doing for me. So Thank You Dawn Douglas at Excalibur HQ.
I have the Equinox almost ready to be shooting again, just have to remount my scope where I want it and make sure it is level and lined and ready to shoot bulls eyes,    . Remount a string and my dissipator pads, adjust my NGSS and my brace height and then I think I will be ready to lock and load. I will shoot when I am in feeling in tip top shape,      .
Thank You,
Raymond
