2002 Vixen String Testin

Post by vixenmaster »

I used 6 diff strings durin these tests on the Chrony. I did use & shoot a 452x Boo String, but i haven't asked him fer permission to put the speeds down fer ppl. to see. To be fair Boo's string was never more than 3 fps slower than the fastest strings i used. Most of the shots wid his were right there or + or -. Vixen has straight Riser & its wider than either cast or Forward Risers so strings need to be longer. Well we all knowed that the optional strings are made be Danny Miller so his Fast Flite is up 1st.
282 fps 355gr arrow 269 fps 400gr arrow 266 fps 415gr arrow 229 fps 628gr arrow.
My D97 281 fps 355gr arrow 269 fps 400gr arrow 267 fps 415gr arrow 228 fps 628gr arrow. Dacron 264 fps 355gr arrow 255 fps 400gr arrow 253 fps 415gr arrow 221 fps 628gr arrow. My 452x 281 fps 355gr arrow 268 fps 400gr arrow 266 fps 415gr arrow 228 fps 628gr arrow. Sumpin some of you maybe interest in, i took a shorter brace ht. string that was 2" above Riser joint jus to see how much speed it lost vs. a 1" brace ht. D97 276 fps 355gr arrow 265 fps 400gr arrow 262 fps 415gr arrow 225 fps 628gr arrow. So that shows jus cause you have abit of a short brace ht, string it won't get up n go! Mag. tip limbs came on this Vixen. I still have several more chrony string & arrow weight tests to do wid Vixens. I will put a set of carved tip limbs on this straight Risered Vixen & a Dacron string to see whats she does. I will also use a Forward Riser & both types of limbs too see the results. I bet when i hook up my string wid a Forward Riser i can get Miss Vixen jumpin around 300 fps! :D

Mike, I couldn't make make head nor tails of your post so I had to do this to see what the heck you were talking about and I figured I wasn't alone so here you go.

Factory Dynaflight
282 fps 355gr arrow
269 fps 400gr arrow
266 fps 415gr arrow
229 fps 628gr arrow

My D97
281 fps 355gr arrow
269 fps 400gr arrow
267 fps 415gr arrow
228 fps 628gr arrow.

Dacron
264 fps 355gr arrow
255 fps 400gr arrow
253 fps 415gr arrow
221 fps 628gr arrow.

My 452x
281 fps 355gr arrow
268 fps 400gr arrow
266 fps 415gr arrow
228 fps 628gr arrow

Something some of you may be interested in, I took a shorter brace height. string that was 2" above Riser joint jus to see how much speed it lost vs.

D97
2" brace height.................. 1" brace height

276 fps 355gr arrow............281 fps
265 fps 400gr arrow............269 fps
262 fps 415gr arrow............267 fps
225 fps 628gr arrow............228 fps

So that shows just cause you have a bit of a short brace height, string it won't get up and go! Mag Tip limbs came on this Vixen. Very nicely done, thank you. Actually i think the Vixen model does very well at 150 lbs.
Cast Riser model 17" mainframe
263 fps arrow 355gr.
Thats 30gr heavier than the allowed weight of 325.

xcaliber wrote:Interesting how the FF starting catching up as the bolt weight went up. Even the Dacron starts showing improving speeds as the bolt weight increases. This is important to note for the hunters especially the guys using the heavier, harder hitting bolts. You can use a Dacron string when you get up in weight without giving up too much.
Great testing Mike! 8)

Great testing indeed!
Guessing the limb efficiency increase's with heavier arrow's?? I'm not a engineer though, that's way above my pay grade

Wid thar be only a few fps that separates them wid the lightest arrow. The Brownell FF+ was a 30 strand string where as Factory optional was only 24 strands. Usin a vixen i spect i could drop number of strands lose some of the string weight & pick-up some fps. Now fer those who do make their own as you decrease the strand count the dia. also reduces so the servin needs to increase. Don't want string goin under yer arrow

With the exception of the Dacron, all strings were within 3 FPS of each other. Interesting! Now if we had a "noise meter" Hummmmm :D :D

Interesting outcome. Although I suspected there would be minimal difference between FF strings. Glad to know I can stop by BassPro and buy a Excal FF string and know its as fast as any other string out there.
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4
