re: food plot

Post by FISH-ON »

Hey guys, I wanted to ask for your opinion. The property I usually hunt has just harvested there winter wheat from last season and it doesn’t look like anything else will be planted until next spring. My big concern is w/o any food source on the farm there will be a lot less deer sightings= no chance what so ever. Other then possible salt licks/food plots….is it worth trying to plant anything in the ground in the hopes that it grows for Oct. (corn? soya beans? clover?) successfully keeping the deer around, any input will appreciated…
Thanks

Your profile does not say where you are located - but assuming Canada then there is still time to plant turnip/brassica. Time is running out but if planted in the next 10-14 days it will do quite well and grow right into November. Once there have been a few hard frosts it will bring the deer in like 90.

I will be planting some winter peas and turnips from whitetail institute around august 15. first year for the peas so the jury is still out on those but the turnips have been torn up! the tops go first but the deer were back digging the turnips up in late december

Scatter some oats around. They will have enough time to grow before fall and provide nutrition for the deer but will die off in the winter so the farmer won't have to deal with them in the spring.

Thanks for the suggestions...my problem now is trying to find a few bags this late in the season....I figured TSC would have had it for sure.
If anyone knows where I can buy a few bags of oats &/or beets (seeds), it sure would help

You have not filled in your location and Species has asked.
If you fill in your location someone might be able to help you. Are you on the third rock from the sun?
I would check out a Coop. Places like Quality Seeds etc will but they are in Canada and you light be in Lower Slabovia for all we know.

You can also google "oats supplier Ontario" and also look in Ontario Agriculture and Food's website and you might find this http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/cro ... vercrp.htm
But that is assuming you are in Ontario, Canada, Earth
I just got a 20 kg bag of Ground Hog Radish at my local Coop has winter rye in stock. If you seed winter rye and something like Ladino clover or alfalfa you might end up with an annual plot next year. Plus you deer may eat the winter rye later this year. Timing for the above planting is mid August.

Still have time to plant Rye. Plant it thick, broadcast and drag it, it will look like a tall lawn. Deer love it

If you plant Rye make dang sure it is not Rye Grass unless you want a farmer to hate you.
I would go for a mixture of Winter Wheat and Oats. They work...

purple top turnips, tillage radish and winter wheat wil do well if planted soon, next couple weeks. spray with glysophate let sit a few days, till ,smooth , fertilize with 19/19/19 at 150 lbs per acre, then drag with old bedspring weighted with a few rocks should be good to go this season. next year do a soil sample. :)
