How long before your first archery deer?

Post by chicotrout » Sat Aug 03, 2013 10:31 am

I was just thinking that it took me four looong seasons of hunting with archery tackle before I learned enough from my mistakes to bag my first deer--a big doe. I started bow hunting in the late 80's and we didn't have all of the media available to us hunters that we do nowadays back then; I also didn't know anyone else that bow hunted at the time so I had to learn on my own. So, I thought it would be neat to hear how long it took others to bag their first archery deer and whether it was a buck or a doe.
Happy Hunting!!!

Back in 68 I shot my first bow kill with a 42 pound Ben Pearson Recurve. I shot a fork horn buck on a deer drive my friends parents were making to us. He came in behind me on the drive I do not even think he was aware that folks were coming the other way as they had just started the drive. It as more of a sneak hunt then a drive for the parents that were doing it and the mother did not bow hunt she was just walking to keep the deer in the right direction. That would have been my second year of bow hunting. We used to practice shooting ground squirrels with bows at the fair grounds. That was good practice. :D

My first year of bow hunting 1997 I had hunted for 9 or 10 afternoons in a row on a White Oak flat before harvesting a doe as the sun began to fall on a Hallowen hunt. First deer I ever drew on, I shot straight down with a old Golden Eagle compound striking her directly in the spine and exiting through the bottom of the chest with a 100 grain 3 blade Satelite Broadhead. Zero distance travelled. I will never forget that hunt very magical for me :D :D

I started bow hunting in 1998. Killed my first deer in 2000. 8 point buck, not huge, 16 inches inside, short tines. Saw him come into the field 200 yards away, as he walked across the field he hit my scent drag, put his nose to the ground and fallowed it right too me. I shot him at 7 yards broadside. This was also the first year I was in a tree stand. I'll never forget that day.

Several years before shooting and recovering one with a compound bow.

Bought my first Xcal two years ago. Killed a doe on the first trip out. Second trip out killed another doe and my first 10 point after 32 years of deer hunting. It's been a match made in heaven. :)
