String life and replacement?

Post by JAGG »

A friend of mine is presently thinking of buying a crossbow and he has been asking my opinion. Not that I use one myself, but I have been steering him in an Excalibur direction. Some of our discussion included string life and cost of replacement. Ease of user replacement of an Excalibur string and the cost is a no brainer, but I am hoping someone here might give me a general idea of the life expectancy, string costs and the rates for physically replacing the strings (if required) for wheeled crossbows.

Any help will be appreciated!

You will more than likely need a press in order to change strings on compound, unless you get the new Mission bow. I'm new, but bought a stringer and changed my string in a matter of minutes on my Matrix. I've worked on a bunch of vertical compounds over the years when I worked at a pro shop, and I usually changed the string and cables and on those it usually was around $100.

I had my string and cables replaced today on my old 6point Pro Slider. String was $21.99 and cables were$41.99 plus $15.00 for labor. Ten Point recommends change every 3 years. Mine lasted longer even with a lot of shooting. :o

I make my own so cost is less of an issue, neither is changing the string with Excalibur. I can do it in less than 2 minutes. My compound is another matter. Requires a strong press to change both string and cables. But duration is the same for all my bows: Every two years or three re-serves, which ever comes first; since I don't unstring my bows overwinter. Having had a compound blow up in my face, I don't take chances with any issue that could do it again.

If your buddy goes the Excal route, tell him to contact Danny Miller for strings ect. Danny makes all of Excals strings for them and is the cheapest I've found on them.....[740] 483-2312.
