Marking yards without range finder

Post by duke19ex »

I don't have a range finder yet and so I'm going to have to set out some yardage markers. I'm hunting from a ground blind in an open feild likely up against an overgrown shelter belt. I'm planning to use some orange tape on a dowel rod to mark yardage. Anyone have any other ideas? How can I layout an effective reference without depositing my scent all over the place?

I just memorize specific landmarks. I know there is a post at about 20 yards, a distinct tree at 30, and a trail at around 40. I guess everything in between and if I'm completely unsure I use a range finder.
I think for the most part if you don't lay some markers at different ranges or use a range finder there is going to be a lot of guesswork. If you practice from a stand and get good with guessing distances, you wouldn't even have to lay markers.
That or make sure you get in there way before season to set up your markers.
What are you using to measure the distance from your stand if you don't have a range finder?

My feeder is 20 yards away from my stands. I can easily gauge a little longer or shorter shot based on that.

Your idea of a dowel would work fine too. Myself I would use pieces of broken branch to mark the yardage as they would look more natural. Spray them down good with a scent reducing spray once you push them and then leave them in place. Good luck. :)

Take some kite string and measure at home 10yds and cut it then put it on the ground to measure 10yds,20,30.I'd put a branch or log in those yardages.
Don't worry about scent, just spray down or wear rubber boots.

I have two hunting spots on my property. On one of them I have the distance marked with stones. One stone = 10 yards two stones = twenty and three stones = 30 yards the tree line is roughly 35-40 yards but Im sure you got the idea. The other spot I have certain spots memorized for the distance, none of my shots would be futher then 40 yards.

I have corn at 20 yards in 2 or 3 directions. I also find dead pieces of wood about the size of my arm and lay them out to mark yardages. Use dead wood like that to mark the way in to my stand also - stealth mode. :)

i use branches in a field and mark trees by taking a little bark off, one mark for 10, 2 for twenty and so on!

All good comments. I was planning on pacing out the yards...11 strides equals 10 yards. I really like the idea of the kite string. I could have the distances premarked and then pivot it around my stand and mark multiple directions.

I'm planning on hunting several new locations on this farm depending upon what I see the deer doing as the season progresses. I think I'll try the kit string with sticks or something.

i stretched out a tape measurer on the ground.
if I walk alongside it using an average stride(no stretching) I end up with 12 steps per 10 yards.. this has worked very well for me over the years..i just start at my tree and walk out 24.steps..stick a bright eye in a tree then go 12 more and do another..i may do this at say 10 o clock and 2 o clock then when im in my stand I can use those as reference points gauge yardage around my tree.
but now I have a rangefinder I don't any of that
