Bow Noise

Post by Bobby B »

So I think my Excal Matrix 380 is a little loud. I put a Flemish string on the bow and shooting Black Eagle Executioner, but may need to change to a heavier tip. What have others done to quiten their bows, or am I just assuming my bow is loud. This is my first crossbow, mostly been a compound and recurve hunter for many, many years, and I know what to do for those bows to make them quite.

FWIW, I picked this bow for the ease of changing strings and around here, it would be a pain to find a press and I really don't want to spend the money to have cables/strings changed when needed, as I know the time involved and the cost, and some of those things just don't add up for me.

You can buy string groove silencers at 3Rivers archery to quiet string slap. As for a heavier point on the executioners, I just made up a dozen and left them at 20" long with the 92 gr. insert and I had to go from a 150gr. to a 125 gr. field to stiffen the spine

I used cloth camo tape and wrapped the foot stirrup end to end and that seemed to help a bit, a heavier arrow like 450-500gn would help but you do loose speed but it still should be over 320 fps.

Yeah, today did some chrono work. 419 grain arrow was at 345 fps. That was a BEA that weighed 319 and added a 100 grain field point.

I add 12 3" pieces of yarn about 7" from the ends of the string just unstring your bow pull string apart in the middle and put them in and restring and shoot you will be shocked how much it helps.

Simply stated, the noise bothers you more than it will the game.

Excal has been spittin xbows out since 1983, guys have tried to 'silence' them since day one.

Shoot and enjoy.........

I have an Exomax. When I got it I first filled the voids in the stock w/foam, didnt seem like it helped much.I put some mole skin on arrow hold down, didnt seem like it helped much.I bought a Boo string w/ whiskers, seemed like it helped a litle. I bought a wood stock, seemed like it helped a little. I shoot a little heavier arrow, seemed like it helped a bit.All in all none of the above seemed to help a bunch by them selves, but if you shoot mine now beside a stock factory bow there is a considerable difference.( also several hundred $ diff. ) But for hunting I doubt I have helped it one bit.Keep your shots under 30 yrds and have fun and be safe. These Excal bows are amazing. Mine amaze me nearly every time I shoot them. One of the few products left that will excede your expectations after your purchase.

Congrats on your new Matrix, they are louder than the other models but like others have said anything under 30 yards or so it shouldn't make a difference unless the deer is already spooked. Out of all the things I tried on my Vortex that I had a good Flemish string with Catwiskers seemed to be the best in reducing some noise. I also wrapped my front stirrup with foam tape like others have and the rubber dampeners also helped some. Do a good bit of shooting with your Matrix and get comfortable with it and you shouldn't have any issues when the time comes to kill a deer, you may not even hear the crossbow fire at that moment of truth.

I got this tip from Craig at Gagnon Sports, get a set of limbsavers recurve ultra and place them 4 3/4 inches from the flat part of the limb measuring towards the limb tip and stick them on, there is quite a noticeable difference. Here is a link to show them. You can get them in black or camo.
