Counter sunk scope rail screws

Post by strum »

I saw on a different site where this was done.
supposedly to stop the scope rail from moving.
I just don't get the reasoning for doing this.

If the screws come loose it's still going to move. If I were going to modify a scope base I'd drill it from the top and add a couple screws to go in the peep sight holes. That way it would be locked in from 2 directions and very unlikely to move.
I even contacted Excalibur years ago with the idea and the answer I got was something like, "It would work fine, but is really unnecessary. When the base is attached "as-instructed" it holds just fine."
My base has been on my Phoenix for years (blue loc-tite on the screws) and has never moved, so I guess the K.I.S.S. method works just fine.

Yep. Loctite 242 medium strength thread locker is the right choice. Works great.

I think the reason they are counter sinking them is because the heads of the original screws are so easy to strip out. They are using a different screw with a much larger head per the photos. It looks like it has to be counter sunk in order to seat evenly.
But then again what in heck do I know. I have stripped the heads of both back screws on my Excal scope mount so far.

From what I've read on other sites the problem with the scope mount loosening up is mainly on the Matrix bows. My son just bought a Matrix 380 and we're keeping an eye on the mount. So far no problems.

Issues with stripped hex head or other type screws usually starts with poor quality tools. The ones shipped with the bows are soft enough so you don't break the screws off in the bow. When you feel the tool starting to bend then just let up. Silicone or blue Loctite will do the rest of the job to keep the hardware in place.
