Shooting freehand

Post by MJK »

I'm getting good groups all the way out to 40 yards with a bench rest but I'm finding I can shoot better freehand with my vertical bow even at 15 yards. I'm all over the place with the Exocet. Would a monopod shooting stick work or should I get a bipod stick? What do you all use?

I found what help me was Practise - practise - practise.
Then more practise.

The problem with adding more weight is if you need to shot freehand the problem will only be worse.

Try holding moving your forearm grip way back so that your left elbow is supported by your ribs. (mine is right ahead of the trigger guard) That way you use less muscles to steady your bow. Are you breathing correctly? A few deep breaths and let out enough air so that your diaphragm isn't working?
You'll have to practice a lot to develop the muscles needed to be steady.

Like Boo said, I support my left arm by resting my elbow on my ribs or I also use a monostick when sitting and or standing, it all depends on how I want to practice, I use the bench rest for sighting in only. I should add that I'm more apt to use the mono stick with my longer bows also.

Another good way to shoot free hand is .

Aim at the target .But go high with the bow, come down real slow till you see the poi .Squeeze the trigger ever so slightly when see on the poi.Don't hesitate to shoot. The longer you hold it the more shake you will get from your heart beat .

Same as 8pt said, just like I do with my rifles I use my sling to stabalize my bow for offhand shots.

Thanks for the tips. It's been a long time since I've shot a rifle so standing form is something I'd forgotten. I will have a rest while hunting but I'll keep at this because you never know what you might walk up on going in.

I was actually thinking about this very thing today. I've seen a lot of pics of the members xbows and quite a few have slings. But I've not seen a pic of one with a Ching Sling. This provides a substantial amount of support, I know I was surprised when I first tried it on my rifles. Really helpful when shooting standing, kneeling, or sitting. Some versions do require a third swivel but this should not cause a problem. I plan on setting up my scout rifle and xbow with one.

A google search will pull up plenty of info on them.

Try one of these .
Price is good ,quality first class.
Once you've got it set works really well.
Works like a Ching without the need for a third hole.

Watch your trigger control. Surprisingly many folks don't know they are flinching, even with a crossbow. And the relatively high poundage and often 'creepy' release of some crossbow triggers only exacerbates the problem. Horton's Knee Pod is an inexpensive, light bow support made for shooting while sitting down.

X2 on the flinching an the most important thing for me is what I do after I pull the trigger an try not to move the bow till the arrow hits the target.
