Opening morning success and review of Wasp Jac- Hammer SST

Post by Chris Dillard »

Had a interesting hunt at the Swan Creek Management Area this morning. First I was entertained by two raccoons that were attempting to catch some wood ducks as the ducks were feeding on floating acorns at the base of my tree. Roughly one hour had elapsed since the raccoons and ducks had vacated when movement caught my attention to the left of my swampy perch. A six point buck was in sneak mode as he came from behind my stand, slowly walking past me at a mere eighteen yards. I slowly raised my Exomax to my shoulder as I indexed the swamp buck in my Vari-Zone scope, the buck sensing danger stopped and looked up the tree. We locked eyes that buck and I for mere seconds, until the Wasp- Jac Hammer severed the arteries connecting the heart to its lungs. The young buck accelerated through the swamp at his maximum speed crashing into trees and splashing the black water and then suddenly the deer dropped like a rock in the knee deep water. The buck had covered 75 yards at full speed in just a few seconds. I approached my trophy and marveled at his antlers as I always do when I noticed the entry wound that the Wasp mechanical Broadhead had created. This was my first hunt to ever use a mechanical head of any sort and to say I was impressed is an understatement. I would strongly recommend these heads, the performance and penetration were unreal. I will post pictures of the hunt shortly. Thanks Excalibur and Wasp for great products!! :D

Congrats Chris! You had a better day than I did, hunted daylight to dark and I might as well have been hunting unicorns.

Congratulations on the buck!

I used Jak-Hammers for years and they usually produced a devastating wound. I even took one buck I hit in the liver (he moved as I puller the trigger) that went down in sight (less that 35 yards)! I almost took one front leg (off side) completely off a doe with one, too!
Then "Murphy" finally tampered with my quiver.
When I went from a Vixen to an Exocet (175# and later a Phoenix) I had to start double banding to keep the blades closed in flight. I finally put one through a buck (luckily a heart shot) that failed to open. When I recovered the arrow the blades were still banded closed! I did recover that buck, but I went back to fixed blades after that. Still have to scratch my head and wonder when thinking about that shot. I normally ho for a double lung shot and that was the first (and only) time I ever deliberately tried a heart shot. Conditions were perfect (exactly the yardage I was sighted in at and a perfect broadside on a calm deer) and for some reason the little voice in my head told me to shoot for the heart. That buck had about a 7/8" hole through his heart when I field dressed him.

Big gaping holes and I'm still amazed at how far a deer can run after being shot so well through the vitals.
Thanks for posting.

There ain't nothing finer than approaching your downed trophy. Congratulations!!
I will have to try the Wasp. Almost went with them instead of reapers. They look like they perform exceptionally well.
