First crossbow deer

Post by duke19ex »

Hello all, it's been awhile. I've been working hard at learning the ins and outs of bow hunting my first season. I've been hunting out of a field and stream ground blind but recently ditched it so I could be more mobile. I still don't have a range finder, dear Santa, so I've been pacing yardage and using kite string and flags.

I've been hunting a hay field that had a lot of Pre season activity in the evenings. The problem seems to be distance. Deer are there but general not close enough. Mornings are never good there so after sitting 2 hours I decided to move to the pond stand. Jumped 2 does in the sorgum on the way there and one in the woods. Sat down and started seeing/ hearing deer.

I missed my first shot on small doe at what I thought was 30 yards. It was a very clean miss. I shot a target to check my bow and was dead on so I chalked it up to nerves and or bad distance estimate. Lost my bolt too. I generally do best after miserable failure. Went back out at 2 and started seeing deer a 3:30. While watching deer in the woods in front of me a die walked from the woods behind me not 15 feet from the bush I was in. After 10 mins of staring at each other she walked and smelled my 20 and 30 yard flags. Again staring straight at me I managed to sight her up while she was looking away, but she was standing facing directly towards me. Literally on top of my 20 yard flag. I decided to take the shot at her neck being she was so close. Hit her a little higher in the neck than I aimed, maybe because it was up hill? She dropped immediately were she stood. My first crossbow kill.

The wasp jackhammer spears to have opened but did not exit the back side, maybe I hit neck bone? Anyway I'm glad I got my first bow kill in. Now that I've got some meat in the fridge I can chase my first bow buck. Thanks for all the advice so far.

Well, I just figured out how to post pics, so I thought I'd post one. Hit the neck higher than I wanted, I think she may have ducked a bit. Normally I wouldn't have taken such a shot, but she was practically standing on top of me. Hoping to go back out next weekend. the summer sausage is great!
