400 yd recovery!

Post by slider »

I was able to harvest a mature doe last Thursday night in a cornfield.

Shot was 30 yds slight quartering away and a full pass through with good blood on arrow. The doe run at impact very strong with 20 foot bounds over a hill in the field. I assumed she would expire before the 200 yds at the end of the field.

Only very tiny specks of blood on the whole tracking mission but a few bits of good colour hair. Luckily we had 25 cm of fresh powder that day to aid in tracking. She ended up in a cedar swamp 400 yds from impact without slowing down at all and also jumping a fence.

I have taken 17 deer since 2008 with my Excal Phoenix and never ever had one go that far. Without snow and only tiny specs of blood the recovery would have been super hard.

The bolt only took out one lung therefore I assume such a long recovery. Hard to believe as the cavity was full of blood and the exit was not too high as you can see in the picture.

One of my friends shot an 8 pt. this year quartering away and his arrow went through and only took out one lung but it entered and exited on the same side. His went about 400 yards also there was 4 of us looking for it and we jumped it finally and then we backed out and he found it the next day about 50 yards from where we jumped it. We didn't start tracking it for about 2 hours after we had shot it and we thought for sure it would be dead. Deer do some crazy things they really have a strong will to keep going if they can.

Congrats on your doe and for not giving up.

I shot a doe at 10 yards my neighbor drove out to me, she ran 450 yards at full blast until she had no blood running through her veins....followed her 20 foot bounds all the way to her the whole 450 yards, she had to cover that range in bout 20 seconds  ....

400 yards is a true test of a hunter, congrats on the deer, and the determination. Well done!

I am a firm believer in using a tracking dog My little jagd terrier eats about a50 lb bag a year plus scraps cheap enough for all the deer found
