First deer ever, with an Excal of course

Post by Riverside archer »

The colder weather here in Maryland finally gave me my opportunity. I was able to take a nice size doe from my ground blind at 23 yards. Made a perfect heart shot with the Exocet. The deer did not react to the sound of the shot but they took off when the doe launched herself 6 feet into the air at impact. She only made it about 30 yards, not even off the property.

I am fortunate enough to be able to bow hunt until the end of January and the management zone I live in has an unlimited antlerless bag limit. (One of the very few benefits of living in Maryland.)

My Exocet is what you would call "factory stock." Got the vari zone scope and I am shooting Firebolts tipped with Boltcutters. The whole package is a tack driver and worked flawlessly. The only drawback is since I hunt from a ground blind my bolt was lost after the pass through.

BTW, I have been lurking here for a while and I have to say this is the most helpful and friendly group of folks I have come across.

Here's a few pics too. As you can see I have a few to choose from. My doe was one out of a group of 15 or so that paraded by yesterday.

Congrats. We have a long season in Alabama as well. It's nice to pace yourself or go fishing knowing that you have plenty of hunting days left.
